I would rate the colour quality pecking order, in the Leica stable, M9 -1 DMR - 2 and M8- 3.

Jaap, what is an 8.3? Have I been sleeping?

I'd say the biggest difference is in the available lenses. If you'd like a 35/1.4-on-M9 eqivalent for the M8, you'd need a ~28/1.1 to get the same DOF and noise control (or even faster since the M9 gives less noise per pixel).
