KEH.com and Overseas Credit Card?

Hi there, a couple of days ago I posted on the leica M forums how i finally ordered a M from KEH.com. A couple of days ago I got a email from Tim Smith saying they cannot verify my credit card and I will need to send them a scan of my credit card and of my driver license. Im just a little worried and confused as a) this is sensitive information and b) the money has already been taken out of my account. Can someone tell me if this is common practice? or am I worrying too much?

From memory I had to do the same thing with Freestyle before I could order from them.

Interesting, had no problems with my NZ credit card when I bought from KEH, but that was a year ago. Some people must think that NZ is the Nigeria of the South Pacific.....

Hi, I've just bought a Mamiya 6 from KEH and had the same thing happen. Apparently, it is required just the first time an order is placed. KEH were exceptional to deal with, my camera was much better than described and it arrived in Australia very quickly. Hope that reassures you.

It certainly is a bit uncomfortable today. I was really impressed by your gallery; may I ask which scanner you are using?

the money is most likely just being held at the moment, which can look like it has already been taken out. KEH is, IMO, the most trustworthy company in the photography biz. They are the only people I order gear from now. if you are concerned, just grab their email address off of their website and send an email to them to confirm that it was in fact them who sent the message. I certainly can't blame you for being wary in this day and age.

Epson V700.

I put a lot of work into my scanning with negative preparation and careful post processing ... but do use the standard Epson carriers and software. They are an excellent and under rated scanner for the price IMO.

I do dream of a Nikon for 35mm though! 😀

I went through a similar process very recently with B&H (I'm in Australia). B&H have a secure upload facility for the scans which is a nice way to do it, I'd be uncomfortable with sending that information via email.

What process does KEH use? Upload, email, something else? I'm thinking about buying some items from KEH in the near future.

i had the same. TO that irritaiton was added the fact that by the time they'd finished with this bureaucracy, they sold the item - which I'd already paid for, money in their account - to someone else. THey refunded and of course I got hammered around $50 on the 'spread' in exhchange rates between credits and debits.

THey promised to refund this amount and, after some weeks, did so.I kept my cool, so did they, and I would certainly trust and deal with them again.

I'm in Korea and I've never bought from them because their international shipping rates were horrendous. I guess you guys can stand them OK.

I can't remember if I had to do this the first time I ordered from them, but I know I did the first time I ordered from B&H. I was very unsure to start with but it was painless in the end, thankfully.

My one gripe with KEH is their USPS shipping. I ordered a lens and back for my Mamiya 8+ weeks before going to Nepal last year, and it arrived a few days after I left. They sited the delay to waiting until they had a big enough order for dispatch, or something equally weird sounding, especially seeing as it wasn't the first time I'd ordered from them. Though like everything, it arrives in better condition that you'd imagine. Just be weary with time frames if you really need something, is the best advice I can give. Other than that one issue though, they're absolutely wonderful to deal with.

I used UPS when ordering from KEH and it was here in Australia 2 days later. I didn't think the cost was unreasonable and it has the added advantage of tracking.

Yes my 1st time with KEH and even BH I did fax my credit card. I think that is good security as there are scams that the credit card numbers are being copied and used in online ordering. Once you have this on file at KEH the succeeding purchases are hassle free already. If your card expires, you may need to fax the new card again though.

Funny. I've ordered from KEH a few times but I never had to verify my credit card or anything unusual. From their perspective I'm ordering from outer space (Finland). Could it be related to a certain type or brand of credit card so that they can verify credit card X but cannot verify credit card Y?

I had to do the same thing. It happens over a certain price of merchandise with a new buyer.

I am living on an island off the south coast of S. Korea, several hours from a camera shop. I buy from KEH all the time, using a Korean credit card and KEH's service has always been first class. I cannot remember my first time with KEH but I do remember Adorama asking the same question on my first purchase. If my regular experience is anything to go by then you should not hesitate to buy from them. Having said that the new website just failed to recognize my shipping address a couple of hours ago, but I am sure that is a glitch that will be overcome.
