Ken Rockwell on the M6 and M6 TTL

The MP is a religious item introduced to address the needs of fundamentalist LEICA followers.

He's outrageous ... and great value for a giggle!

By the way ... any thread mentioning Ken Rockwell will usually be consigned to 'off topic' very quickly these days! :D

Actually, I haven't figured out yet what he is...a talking head without a TV show? He is a damned good photographer. Funny writer. Shifting sands when it comes to reviewing new cameras... overly commercial, insincere? I dunno, but overall, I like the guy but there are times...believe me there are times.

I bought the D40 for my wife when he recommended it. It has been okay but no more ok than anything else out there. Nikon makes a cheap ass camera that is all plastic. Plastic lenses, plastic images. The camera is a freaking nightmare to set with spinning the wheel (not wheels, just one), the lenses are freaking slow, quality sucks and yet it can take great images if you forget the on-camera flash and buy another flash to go on top, etc. etc. etc..... grrrr. It is almost as frustrating as the D2X and D3 with all the stupid menus, settings, auto this and auto that. I have been able to produce good, even stunning images with all of Nikon's latest electronic, computer wonders but it is not fun. I also dislike looking like every soccer mom out there with a 300mm lens pretending to be a photographer.

Give me a simple camera and I will simply take pictures.

I have limited (very limited) experience with DSLR's but when I needed to get one I got a D90 partly because I have a lot of Nikon glass. I made a commitment to learn the thing and have come to use it quit a bit. Combining the motor drive feature with my really excellent Nikon lenses< i have been able to get really nice results.

Is there a really better (easy to use) DSLR out there? Or are they all a pain to use?

Oh, some more DSLR bashing ...

:D

Is there a better DSLR than Nikon? Of course not. The D90, like all Nikon DSLR's is a very good camera. Used one for 4 years at a previous job.

Are they all a pain? Yes. But if you shoot sports, weddings, and a whole host of other things, you simply have to have them! I have used them for years and you do have to get used to them and continue to educate yourself by using them, not letting them sit on the shelf and pulling them down now and then. They are fantastic tools.

I no longer shoot anything that requires such sophisticated equipment. I am a happy man. Now, I get to use what ever piece of equipment I want based on whether or not it will accomplish my task. Would I like an F6? Sure, I would love to try it. Would I prefer a rangefinder? Sure, film, digital or whatever. Am I happy with MF? Absolutely. Am I happy with film? Absolutely.

Don't get me wrong, I have used the D40 both professionally and for candid snapshots and I get consistently great results. But in comparison to a camera like the M3 or a Nikon F3, etc., it is a piece of junk IMO, quality and material-wise. The D2H and D2X were much more quality pieces but overly complicated.

The D40 is a very good picture-taking machine, one just has to master what one has to use:

This one went off topic pretty quick!
From M6 to D40! God bless Ken.

I don't get it. I just set my 20D to manual and just go.

What's all the fuss and belly aching about "OPTIONS" for the DSLR camera? you can use them if you want, or you can ignore them and they go away. I think their complexity is completely overblown.
