Ok, I get it. But this is like day 5 of him blathering on how great the X100 is. His plea that he doesn't get paid by corporate interest is starting to sound a bit much. He's sounding more and more like a shill, and less the unpaid blogger he claims to be. I'm not a spoilsport, actually I seriously want to dump my Pannny m43 for the Fuji X100, but I like my 7-14mm, my 20mm1.7, even my fisheye - of course I'm conflicted. Good old Ken sounds like he got a "consulting" gig from Fuji, now I'm starting to wonder about his recent move to Nevada with some suspicion.

I am reading his bit on the X100 and it's so much fun... Where was the X100 before he lavished the same praise on the Leica M9? And where was Leica by the time he was showering the Niion offerings with absurd compliments?

Oh, well... if it weren't online it'd be fairly decent bathroom reading. As it is now, it's kind of entertaining. My only problem: do some people really take him seriously?

Well he's basically running a commercial site anyway and being quite upfront about it:

Help me help you

I support my growing family through this website, as crazy as it might seem.

The biggest help is when you use any of these links to Adorama, Amazon, eBay, B&H, Ritz, Calumet, J&R and ScanCafe when you get anything. It costs you nothing, and is this site's, and thus my family's, biggest source of support. eBay is always a gamble, but all the other places always have the best prices and service, which is why I've used them since before this website existed. I recommend them all personally.

If you find this page as helpful as a book you might have had to buy or a workshop you may have had to take, feel free to help me continue helping everyone.

If you've gotten your gear through one of my links or helped otherwise, you're family. It's great people like you who allow me to keep adding to this site full-time. Thanks!

If you haven't helped yet, please do, and consider helping me with a gift of $5.00.

As this page is copyrighted and formally registered, it is unlawful to make copies, especially in the form of printouts for personal use. If you wish to make a printout for personal use, you are granted one-time permission only if you PayPal me $5.00 per printout or part thereof. Thank you!

Thanks for reading!

I love the bit of scary talk about private use printouts allegedly being unlawful unless you take his generous offer of $5 per printout. Way to be a complete dork, Ken!

Anyway, whether he's paid for it by Fuji or just very enthusiastically hitching the X100 hype bandwagon to generate click-through sales for his partner programme account at Amazon and Adorama - if he gets on your nerves, just ignore him. You're not alone.

Ken is great as a second or third opinion, but I'd take any buying recommendation with a grain of salt. He's fun reading though.

He does praise things in one place and slag them off elsewhere. You'd think he really liked the M9 until you read his M3 vs M9 piece.

My Uncle, an AVID amateur photographer, takes him VERY serious.
"Did you read what Ken Rockwell wrote about X.Y.Z."

I'm always very polite, but I usually say something like, Ohhhh Ken, gotta take him with a grain of salt. He never asks what I mean by that. I always find that strange lol.

In the wods of Chris101 the other day:

"It's twoo, it's twoo!"

:D

I took him seriously enough before he told me that one of my best loved lenses Nokton 1.1 was garbage, giving no argumens but saying than it can't be any good at such a low price. Wish it costed him 5000$ for he could love it.
So, in my mind he is ruther a good writer then a gear expert. Go on reading him every now and then anyway..

Well, I confronted KR on this issue a few weeks ago and he said that the X100 was not for professionals. "Rich people" needing a toy, yes. Which is to say that he did not include it in the same class as the M9. Who would?

Yes, he is commercially influenced but who's not in the review world? For that matter, who is the all-knowing guru? I take all reviews with a grain of salt much like I have reviews of sports cars since the 1960's. Just remember there are more arseholes than arses in the world.

I like Ken and appreciate that he keeps certain photographic things in the forefront. Also, he posts very good pictures.;)

Ken Rockwell is a seriously good source if you want to know quickly about variations of Nikon AF lenses. His website does have its uses.

Other than that, there a so many other good blogs out there to spend your precious reading time on.

I appreciate Ken, in spite of his unrestrained use of superlatives; his writing style is unique. At least he actually goes out and tests this equipment and apparently has more than a bare minimum of photographic talent.

I am worried, however, as his blog entries have become somewhat irregular and repetitive. Not only that, but his editing has slipped a little. Maybe the above-mentioned move to Nevada would explain these.

KR? Just fun to read, nothing more...

KR? Just fun to read, nothing more...

Pretty much every single piece of equipment KR ever reviewed was/is absolutely the best thing in the history of the whole existence, right after air itself and just before God... the only problem is, that very same piece is in fact regarded the worst possible choice in the world - in the very next review :)

If you're buying a new camera, and, for god knows what reason, you consult KR, you'll end up buying d40, because it's small and he and his wife can take photos of their kids, sb600 because it's small and he takes it everywhere, d3 because it has 5:4 aspect ratio built-in, sb900 - it's so powerful, but you don't really want that since it's the same thing as sb800, but nikon just makes idiot out of you and charges you premium, at least 15 prime lenses in all possible mounts, they're, of course, the best, and 18-200 vr, so you don't need to carry those primes with you, canon 5dmk2, since you'll be printing huge photos, d700 for that "free wireless flash control", m9, it's german, it's best, but only summilux from 1950, newer are just the same, but crappier actually, and so on, and so on...

everything he ever reviewed is absolutely perfect and the best there is - in that review...

I admit that some of his stuff, maybe even most, is really fun to read :) but to take him seriously for anything than just a quick specs? please...
