Seems to be the day for the kiev shutter questions...anyway, I just got a super clean kiev 4 from Oleg. But I have a functionality question. How far does the shutter cock wheel have to turn to cock? I turn it about 270 degrees and I hear an audible click, but there's no resistance. The shutter doesn't seem to fire there. So where should the black dot be at the start and end of the motion? If i turn it further than the first click, then i get resistance, which seems to be right to me, and then i can set the shutter speed. I just don't want to trash this camera 2 hours after I unbox it.

sorry for the newbie question...

Do you have film in the camera? This will make a difference in resistance.

I might be off here, but if so, I'll be corrected: two things happen when you turn that knob; one after the other. First, the film is advanced, then the shutter is cocked. Could be the other way around, but I don't my 4am in front of me to tell. (Take the back off yours while turning the wheel and you'll see what I'm talking about.) After the first click, the film should be wound to the next frame. The resistance you're feeling afterward is the shutter moving into place.

I'm new to the Kiev 4 also, but mine works like this.....

My shutter speed is currently on 1/500 of a second. So the black dot on the film advance dial is resting on 1/500.

When I start to cock the shutter the film advance dial moves freely until approx. 200 degrees before I hear a "click".

After the click sound, there is resistance as I continue to advance the shutter to 1/500 sec. where it stops.

So if my shutter speed at the beginning is at 1/125 sec., it should stop truning at 1/125 sec.

I hope this helps a bit.

You have to turn the limb until the dot matches the shutter speed selected. You won't break the shutter on a functioning Kiev or Contax by turning it incorrectly.
