Kiev-4 film rewind?

Hello

Im new to the forum here and have a question regarding the Kiev 4. I just ordered one and should be recieving it from russia in a week or so. But my one question has to do with whether the Kiev 4 model has a film rewind capability as opposed to having to load the film into an empty canaster. Im also wondering what it is about these cameras that stop them from being able to rewind the exposed film back into its own film cartridge. Any info would be appreciated. Im not new to photography, however i am rather fresh in the dept of old school rangefinders.

The Kiev's rewind like most other cameras, they have a button on the bottom plate, you press and hold it while using the rewind knob.

The only caveat is my Kiev 4 came with a winding spool that has a clip in a center slot, which holds the film firmly enough that it won't rewind the entire film into the canister. After rewinding, I need to open the back and detach the film from the spool and finish the winding by hand. Not really a problem, IMHO.

My Kiev 4 doesn't. There are two latches that hold the baseplate and back. One of them has a position marked with a red dot. Turning the latch slightly to face the dot releases the rewind mechanism, then you can rewind the film using the rewind knob.

Using two cassettes is an option with the to '80 Kiev and origional Contax.

The other option is to employ a spool in place of an empty cassette, most Kievs (or Contax) will come with a loose spool in the take up chamber, some will be bodges like cassettes inners (like 40ozs), others will be pukka Kiev spools (with Kiev) on them, (or even Contax)!

Some Kiev come without anything when you will need a fine saw and a plastic inner from a shop bought cassette, and another e-bay for the FSU camera sellers who will sell both Kiev reloadable cassettes and Kiev take up spools.

The pukka spools either have either a sprocket hole tooth or a narrow slit for the standard cassette film leader, these are both easy to use/load. The real spools and reusable cassette inners have a narrow hole at end to receive the pin in the Kiev baseplate.

Rxmd has a late post '80 M model with a fixed take up spool which has a tooth.
