Kiev 4/Jupiter 8 - performance wide open

Hi Igor -- The Photo.net discussion didn't yield any f/2 shots, though the ones posted were good. Here's a pair shot in a dim restaurant with a Kiev and J8 wide open with surely some camera shake too since the shutter was about 1/2 sec handheld.
 
Any experience with the J-3? I posted some sample pics with it in an earlier post. I just returned from minsk varjag, kak dela? Where do u buy your jupiter lenses, is there a shop selling second-hand rangefinder gear in the city center?

Hi Vincenzo :)

I got my Kiev-4a with the J8, release cable and orange filter at the flea market, in the city suburbs, for the whopping $15. There's also a comission store selling used cameras at Nemiga st. IIRC. Sometimes you can get old gear from newspaper classifieds, but it takes time and probably not a suitable way for an occasional visitor. Drop me a line if you'll be in Minsk again, I could show you the places.
 
Thanks folks - i'm interested in this myself too, since it seems that i will have a Kiev with some lenses soon:D
They look nice; hope mine will perform good as well.
 
Three pix wide open, sorry about the scanner but it will give you some idea of the preformance

I hope Roman is looking at your pics too, ikophot! Each one shows the same effect in out of focus background specular highlights as my first one above. See those bright-rimmed disks? It's not just my particular J8 lens that does that! :)
 
Yep, I did look at them, and none of mine do this...
But I guess it might also depend on the shape and distance of the light-source a bit, maybe?

Yes, I expect that's so... as certainly some of my reasonably close/wide shots don't show it either.
 
Shooting a test chart with my Kiev 4, I compared my (1972) 50mm Jupiter 8 with my (early) Tessar and obtained the following results for resolution (lppmm):-

Contrast with the Jupiter 8 was low at f/2.8 and too low to resolve the chart at f/2: the figure above* is that specified by Isaak S.Maizenberg. My Jupiter 8 is much better corrected for chromatic aberration than my Tessar: the latter is so old it appears to have been corrected for blue light!
