Ongoing, ongoing... lenses, models... so I understand the kiev mount is essentially the same as the contax, nikon... so either zeiss, nikkor will mate up with it? Are there any limitiations? I have a good friends who has a nikkor 135 that he would sell for pennies, and just wondering if anyone has tried this...

I'm new to this folks, please be patient with me. Really would be great to see all I can obtain for these unique and wonderful machines...

Nikkor telephotos will probably not work on a Kiev. Nikon used a shorter mount-to-film distance than the Contax/Kiev standard.
This isn't a real problem with wide angles, but Nikon teles would be focusing in front of the film plane by about 0.7mm (if I remember the numbers correctly).

However, Nikkor made batches of its 85, 105 and 135mm telephotos in Contax mount. These would fit on a Kiev. The normal Nkkor 50mm lenses are problematic (don't focus accurately). The wide angle Nikkors focus fine because depth of field compensates for the focus difference.

You can a tell a "Contax" mount Nikkor because there is a chrome or white 'C' - with quote marks - engraved on the barrel. Not red C under the filter ring on front, which stands for "coated". The 'C' for Contax will be towards the base of the lens.

The wide angle CV lenses 21-35mm in Nikon rfdr mount will work ok to, and there are still some available new.

The Nikon F adopter to Nikon rdfr is now a collectible...

May I respectfully disagree? I use a Jupiter 8 on both a Nikon S2 and a Nikon SP and find that it is fine. Even my 85mm Jupiter (can't recall the number) is fine on both Nikons when not wide open. Perhaps I am not as discerning as others, but I print cropped 8x10 or so. Dave

This is the same problem as with FSU vs. Leica LTM lenses.

Nikon used Leica standard focal length of 51.6 mm while the FSU lenses are built up to the Contax standard focal length 52.3 mm.

So: wideangles can be used without problems, 50 and longer only if you either stop down, or don't use them close-up. At infinity or longer distances they focus the same.
