Kiev 4 question

Just got my first Kiev, a really nice one directly to my mail box in less than two weeks from Moscow. Came in its nice leather case and in a padded envelope. Can you imagine, no box, just a padded envelope. Good thing it wasn't $500.

Everything seems fine but the self timer. It wound up just fine but doesn't trip when you hit the shutter release. It is just dead, wound and dead. Am I missing something. You wind it then hit the shutter release button and wait for it to wind down then it trips the shutter and you have your shot. But it doesn't work. When I hit the button it trips the shutter as always, doesn't trip the self timer, just the shutter. Doesn't matter what shutter speed you have selected.

I can do without it, but the camera was represented as everything working properly. This is not "properly" I would think. If any of you have a clue, let me know. If not, I'll hit the seller for some compensation.

There should be a little arrow behind the self timer. Slide the self timer button (or whatever it's called) and it should work.

As hks3sgte says. the self-timer isn't triggered by the shutter release. You slide the button behind the self-timer cocking lever to the left to start the clockwork mechanism that fires the shutter.

Be aware that the self-timer doesn't work unless you turn the lever through most of its travel, at least. As others have said, flick the little button to start things off. It's quite common for them not to work though but they get so little use that most people don't care.
