Kiev 4 shutter sound?

I've noticed something peculiar about the sound the shutter makes on my Kiev 4. When I switch from another speed to 1/50 sec., the shutter produces a click. But when I cock the shutter again at 1/50 sec. it produces the familiar slow-speed wheeze and keeps on doing that. Is this normal?

I would open the back and perform again your described operations, giving attention to the curtains pace. If in both cases the curtains open and close the same and rationally, I would feel good.

Cheers,
Ruben

Sounds like the escapement is not engaging to produce the lovely wheeze. Does it do this when changing from 1/125 down to 1/50 only, how does it behave when going from 1/25 up to 1/50? The same escapement pallets are engaged for 1/25.

Cheers,

Russ Pinchbeck

It's inconsistent. When I change from 1/25 to 1/50, the wheeze is produced most, but not all, of the time. When I change from 1/125, the shutter almost always clicks, but occasionally it wheezes.

Just a thought: are you cocking the shutter before setting the speed? I've never had a problem myself by not doing this but I've read somewhere that setting the speed before cocking *may* prevent the correct mechanisms being engaged.

It's quite normal. In times longer then circa 1/50 there is no clicking - wheezing appears. It sounds a bit funny and irregular - but it is typical for this camera and it is correct sound - everything works as it should.

Thanks all. I've looked at the shutter opening at 1/50 sec. both when it clicks and when it wheezes and to the eye it appears the same in both cases, so I'm not going to worry about it.
