Kiev 4am back door seals

I am in the process of replacing the back door seals on my Kiev 4am and was wondering if the side channels should also be sealed..

Also what would be the best material for resealing?? Foam or cotton string colored black??

I use foam on my other cameras but some older cameras use blackened cotton string as door seals.

May I suggest the light seal kit from Jon Goodman. I have used one kit to replace the seals on 5 cameras so far.

Originaly, the sides are not sealed, I guess they are light tight enough : they look so anyway!
But be aware that you may have difficulties opening/removing the back afterward, which is already a difficult operation even without sealing...

To seal off the back of the Kiev 4 I used "automotive chrome blackout tape". I got the wide flat black type. You should be able to find it at almost any automotive store. I think I got a roll for $5 approx.

Wipe the area where the tape will be applied with a type of degreaser (rubbing alcohol will work).

Cut a strip of tape approx. 1 cm wide as shown by the red box in this pic and apply. Fold over the extra tape and stick it on to the side where the film pressure plate is on.

Do the same to the other side.

Now the top part.

Before you fold the tape over, you'll need to make 4 vertical cuts on the top half of the tape where ther are corners.

You make those cuts so the tape will stick to the other side nicely.

It's hard to explaine but you'll know what I mean when you do it.

With this method I didn't need to put anything into the channels. Maybe I'm lucky but this works for me. I've done this approx 2 months ago. It's still holding up. The back is a little more snug but that's okay with me as long as it works.
