kiev advance question?

hi all, been lurking and reading on this site for a while and its good to see so many of you keeping these classic cameras alive and kicking. the question i have is- i have a 1971 kiev 4 that in order to advance to the next shot after taking a shot, i have to depress the shutter release button in order for it to wind. its not a great problem but its happened to 3 other kievs ive owned. its absolutely mint in every other way(21 uk pounds of the bay looks like it had never been out the original box!) no leaks, no spacing issues and all speeds etc are dead on, and the meter still works accurately. if its an easy fix i would appreciate some advice just to get it perfect. thanks in advance, chris

Welcome to the forum.

After you take a shot you should be able to advance to next frame without any further pressing of shutter release. Be sure to advance all the 360° (rotate the advance knob until it comes to the stop).

I'd recommend you to look at Rich's Kiev Survival Site and see how the mechanisms work. When you understand how it works, you'll know what might be wrong with it.

I find this happens sometimes on my Kiev 4a, although not every frame. Make sure you press the shutter button fully before releasing it - that helps on mine. Mine doesn't do it badly enough to warrant taking it apart, I can live with it.

Mine too, my first Kiev did this. A bit annoying but easy to get used to a "full" depression of the button when shooting or before winding.

This is a very common fault that I have experienced as well. It is described by Maizenberg in his book. The cause is the misadjustment of a lever under the winding knob. Maizenberg does not go into detail about how to fix it. Presumamly the cause and its solution will be obvious if you take the top off and look at the mechanism

I have found on my Kiev that experiences this problem, the easiest fix is to wind the advance knob backwards just a tad and then advance like normal. There is a notch that engages the shutter release arm. Sometimes, the arm does not swing out far enough to disengage from the notch. This is what prevents the advance knob from working properly. I have yet to find a fix.
