I took my Kiev out to one of our New Orleans second line parades last Sunday -- what a treat! I originally got the Kiev after a thread here about Robert Capa and his Contax; I have an even greater appreciation of his skill now. It's not easy to capture fast moving action with a Kiev! A few shots had flare from the J12, but I really enjoyed myself. Even managed to reload while dancing. This is my favorite shot from the event; there are others in my gallery. I hope they are enjoyed, and comments are welcome.

For some reason, I find shooting with a Zorki-1 or FED-1 or even Leica IIIseries faster than Kiev or Contax: inspite of the former having separate VF and RF. I could think of many occasions when I missed the 'peak moments' with the Kiev....maybe that's just the Barnack-bias in me speaking... :)

I find the "quick focus" dial on the Kiev to be actually slower than focusing with the lens. The dial is fine for getting it just right, but takes forever if you're way out.

Focusing wasn't always easy, but not my biggest problem. I eventually set the J12 to f11 or f16 and let DOF do its thing -- framing through my turret finder. Changing exposures was what got me. The exposure knob on the Kiev isn't the most friendly, and I just can't change the aperture on the J12 without a lot of looking and fiddling. Still it was great fun, and I look forward to doing another one soon.
