Today on ebay, I found several examples of Kiev RFs, where the internal bayonet appears to be REMOVED.
I know, a KIEV-5 does never have an internal bayonet, since the particular standard lenses for the Kiev-5 have an helicoid of their own.
But these are NOT Kiev-5!

Can anyone give me an explanation for that?
Does such a specimen even work properly?

Given that these are across different years and models, it is rather likely that they are bits from the spares bin of the seller - the inner helical removed and used to repair another camera, probably with higher sales value (a real Contax or first generation Kiev).
They are for spares only, by the way, not functional, not even with outer mount lenses - they will neither couple nor be light tight. The inner mount is always required to couple the rangefinder, and the coupling collar is the only element with enough overlap to create a reliable light seal. Compared to other as-is Kievs that at least contain all parts they are no bargain...

The seller offers the lenses with the Helical part still on them. Probably a rough person who removed the lens with force. Thinking the helical is part of the camera. Kind of sad though.
Just like al the prewar Fed camera's where the lens is matched to the camera. Sellers are taking the lenses from the cameras and selling them as M39 lenses which do not fit a Leica mount. Takes a hard puzzle to find back a matching lens for your camera body.
Other sellers remove the entire focussing unit of the camera. You can buy them separately. They where intended to be made as a converter for digital camera's, but the Contax mount is not as popular as the M39.

Ouch. There is only one of them up, as far as I can make out, and he is proudly displaying the helical next to the lens (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1963-JUPI...II-III-IV-CONTAX-RF-EXTRA-MOUNT-/112145993223). Obviously some evil misconception that goes beyond mere ignorance and brute force.

It's difficult enough finding a complete Kiev that works .. let alone ...
I guess that most decent Kievs have found new users [ or collectors ] , maybe just the junk left ... ?

Hi,
Could one of our Russian speakers explain it to him/her? It might save a few from destruction... OTOH, it's raising the price of my collection nicely but I don't think that I like the method.
Regards, David

Good idea. But it's a weird case, anyway:

Hi,
Look at the lens and mount and then click on 'See other items@ and one of them will be the mountless body. It's at:-
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1963-KIEV...557286?hash=item1a1a7d1f26:g:ePEAAOSwxg5XxJYg
and it is described as in vgc.
It could be that he was just lumbered with them and is selling them off as is...
The alternative, could be expensive and time consuming but someone out there could sort it out after buying and make a nice 2a from them.Any way that's just my 2d worth.
Regards, David

Maybe; but hence her/his ebay moniker «sovietussrlens» pretends that they're an expert on USSR lenses, s/he should be honest whether a lens-related good like a camera is really «very good», or not.
I asked them about «completeness» of that camera in question … let's see whether or not I get an answer.

Erm, they answered, as follows:
Hi . This parts are removed with the lens . I think. Thank you and have nice day .

I think we should call on Linda Moulton Howe to investigate this phenomena.

Yes, if not even «awesome»!

Hm. You mean, it's a conspiracy? Both, a political-economical, and an extraterrestrial? That's not unlikely. I guess. No, I'm 100% sure! Particularly, since the seller pretends to be Briton-Lithuanian, they MUST be some sort of extraterrestrials
