I have been told that the self timer is an integral part of the shutter mech and cannot be removed .
I have seen such a camera without s/t - is it possible ?

If the self timer is integral with the shutter, the self timer should come out when the shutter is removed.

The self timer, however, is fit to the front plate of the camera. It operates on its own. Not tried yet, but the self timer should be removable. Sometimes if the self timer is broken, the levers are removed and the covering on the front is replaced like no self timer had been there before.

Even if you leave the mechanism in place, you can unscrew the lever and grind off the external bits to have a smooth covering.
