I was wondering about the focusing mechanism on my Kiev 4AM. I have been using the little knurled wheel in front of the infinity lock, and I have noticed that the lens itself has a knurled ring, which also turns and focuses the camera. Can the camera be focused both ways? Will using the lens ring cause any problems? It would definitely make focusing and hold the camera a lot easier. I really like my Kiev except for the one little feature of the eccentric focusing mechanism.

Thanks to all who reply.

Stephen,
Typically the 50mm lens is focused with the knurled wheel and any other lenses are focused by turning the lens.
You can certainly focus the 50 either way.
The other lenses may put unnecessary strain on the focus wheel and its associated mechanism. The manual for my Kiev 4 says so, anyway.

Seems like I have always grabbed the Kiev's lens on portrait orientation.

Just a matter of releasing the lock.

No problem in over 12 years of useage.
