Kiev IIa Shutter fault

Hey,

Ive been using a Kiev IIa (CLA'd from Fedka) for a month or so now, its had a frew rolls through it and they all seem ok. But today I developed a roll of PanF+ and the last 12 or so frames were blank (I might have left my lens cap on). But today, i was checking the shutter operation, and although the speeds seem fine, when changing them (nearly always from a slower speed to a faster one) the shutter curtain seems to move down (opening the shutter up) in time with the speed knob being rotated, when the shutter is released and cocked again, the shutter is fine. What could be causeing this?

If you look at the shutter curtains you can see two small projections in the top centre of the lower curtain. These are caught by a lever at the top of the frame opening when the shutter is wound and released by movement of the lever when the shutter release is pushed. If the projections are not held securely by the lever then the lower curtain can drop down when shutter speeds are changed.
If this is your problem then it can be fixed by adjusting the cam screw that holds the lever. Some dismantling is required. If you want to do it yourself then this Website will help you:http://www3.telus.net/public/rpnchbck/cleaning and repairs.html

thanks a lot for the help, i might try and fix it myself, but im not quite sure what I have to do. Have you got a picture of the part I need to adjust, or a more detailed description?

try to cock it in one continuous and fast turn. sometimes falling of curtain happens if you are winding it slow and in two half turns.

If it happens again, you take the part with the window and the film rails and roller, which is secured with 4 screws. You have access to an eccentric screw (which is the perfect kind of screw for a Kiev user IMO) which you can turn slightly on either direction. If you turn it clockwise, the little hook that secures the second curtain is harder to move, and anticlockwise it's easier. You just need to find the proper combination between the position and the move so that the second curtain catches correctly. Basis of Kiev surgery!

Seems like it could have just been user error, but i'll run a roll through it tomorrow and see if it crops up again. If so i'll have a little tinker, seems easier than I thought, thought they'd be a much bigger disassembly needed.
