Nice Kiev III with Contax III style meter. Does anyone know how to remove the top plates? I've removed all the visible screws (including the meter controls, and resistor track fibre plate) but neither the chromed facial plate nor the underneath casting (al?) seem to want to lift off the body or separate from one another more than 0.1 to 0.2 of an inch.

The Kiev IIII type 1 and type 2 will separate easily, the chrome top lifts easily first...

The exposure counter seems to be one of the holding items.

Does one need a crow (wreaking) bar?

Noel.

Dear Nikon Bob

Thanks for the prompt reply and suggestion, alas the top removal you referenced seems to be for a meter less IIIIm. The metered models are more complex and my III seems to be stuck even with all the fasteners undone.

I'll try it and the site you suggest again.

I just took the top off a Kiev 4 with meter following the site instructions. I believe that the meter stays with the top and is not connected to anything mechanical. Lots of luck.

My Kiev IIII was the same, the chrome top lifted off easily, the Kiev III is more like a Contax III and neither the facade with the meter nor the top casting seem to want to come away.

My resolution was to post before bending or breaking, your two responses now allow me to proceed to the bend it stage, 4xpl4t4v4 d4l4t4d stage.

Thanks for the feedback I'll advise you want happend next post.

I do NOT encourage you to break or bend anything. I would not force anything.

I was not going top blame you.

Normally I dont stop and think - the post query before continuing is a new safety factor.

I'll tell you what happens next.

The meter is kaput, the exposure calculator kaput, and the topplate damaged and distorted so I was going to use it as a parts camera, more normally my parts cameras turn into collectors or shooters after I fix them.

Apparently the more correct technique is ---

"
You need to take the top plate as a whole block (don't take the meter apart). The trick to un-jam is to use a small screw driver to pry up the counter disk and the disk under it from the front when you lift the top plate.
"

See the 'related posts' for source of this gem!

Glad everything worked out. Had me worried for abit. The counter disc and gear under it came off with the top plate on my Kiev 4 without much force. All cameras are a little different I suppose.

The III seems to be the same as IIIIs for top plate removal.

My III had lots of glue for the Yak hair/twine and more hair than I've seem on a IIII, there was the normal long run visible externally and two internal runs for the viewfinder and sprocket drive gear areas.

The glue required lots of wriggling of the top plate, the counter dial was also 'glued' down with stiff grease.

The meter and calculator seems to have suffered physical damage, the previous owners may have accepted that the lump on top was just a 'wart' some time ago the rest of the camera seems perfect.

Thanks for your help and concern.
