I was doing a shoot in an abandoned paper mill last week, shooting a dance shoot with two other photographers who were using DSLR's with AF... so I switched from my M glass to the kit lens to keep up. The little guy did well, AF was nice and snappy and while the kit lens clearly wasn't able to take advantage of all 24mp, it was sharper than most kit lenses I've tried.

Yeah, for what's essentially a $200 lens that's not plastic crap and has IS, I think people are way too hard on it. When I have time for manual focus, of course I'll be using my M glass, but it's definitely got a spot in my bag now.

I myself wasn't happy with it, and was in turn not thrilled with the NEX-7 until I got the 1,8/50mm prime (not the Zeiss). Much happier with the NEX-7 now.

I don't go in for pixel peeping, but I was really feeling like I wasn't getting the sharpness I'm used to with the kit lens.

I had a really bad copy on a 5N, but my NEX-7 kit lens is ok and not bad. As you suggest, it does work, especially if you keep it in the middle of the zoom range and stop down a bit. The main shortfall is the distortion in the extremes of the zoom range and poor peripheral performance. Most of my photographs don't require perfect corners.

I will keep the lens for outdoor video. It works nicely in this role.

Btw.. you sure put your lens to good use. Nice Images!
