Kodachrome - Mailers are Kaput this year...

If I can't figure how to scan KR64 I'm done with it. Too much realestate in my freezer and no help from the KR project on how to best scan KR slides.

I have too much KR from the 70's and yet have I heard nothing from the KR project guru how best to use vuescan to get these scanned.

My KR stuff will go in the B/S forums.

You keep them for nearly 40 years in your freezer 😱 I might be really tempted to try your KR lol.

wjlapier,

There are IT8 targets for Kodachrome. GOOGLE can tell you how to calibrate your scanner with the target.

East Texas fall & winter

East Texas fall & winter

I have to keep track - 25 rolls is a lot for me to shot in one summer, if I am not running low when fall rolls around, I'll probably give some to people with access to color in winter. New England grey doesn't really do it justice. 🙂

We actually get fall color here-around Thanksgiving. Evergreens and naked hardwoods are interesting in the winter. Keep me on your mailing list. I'll trade with something useful in a NE winter.

It's been a bit frustrating for me when I scanned some Kodachrome a while back. I asked in the KRProject forum how best to scan and never got a good answer.

First off, I don't have 40 year old film! I have slides I took back in the 70's and 80's. Then I picked it up again a few years back. I'm down to maybe 20 rolls of 64 and four rolls of 25.

IT8--I don't know what that is--but I will google and maybe give it a try again.

I'm using a Coolscan V.

Maddoc, thanx for the tip--I'll give it a try today.

OK--so, maybe I'll give KR a try again, if I can get the scans done right.

An IT8 target is a transparency of color squares on Kodachrome film. This target and the right software will calibrate your scanner. The Coolscan V is supposed to be a good scanner. It should work.

You can still have Cibachrome prints made in Hattiesburg, MS.

Thanks!

We have had a lovely spring/early summer. Wildflowers and every shade of green possible. My two rolls of Kodachrome at Dwayne's now are mostly flowers and greens.

I wonder if my old Epson scanner will be up to the task?

If anyone can't shoot enough kodachrome before the various deadlines, let me know, I'd buy more at a reasonable price (and actually shoot it!)

I'll probably use my mailers after all, due to the announcement. But if I don't - I'll give them away after the fall. I now will try to find a few more rolls to use next year before processing halts....

I am not in the US and used the film that came with the international processing. I had always sent the film to Kodak in Australia as it was the closest facility listed on the envelope from where I am. And when they stopped doing processing in Australia they would forward my film to Kodak at Lucerne Switzerland and then the mounted slides would get to me via Australia. Once I realized this I opted to save them a bit of postage and sent my film directly to Lucerne. But when they stopped doing Kodachrome processing in Lucerne they would forward the film to Dwayne's and I would get the slides back via Lucerne. Of course I couldn't send it directly to Dwayne's as they were non-US mailers. They must have been losing money from all that shipping as the slides got back to me fairly quickly, on average of two weeks. All this must have been very unprofitable for Kodak. I can't help but feeling they had mis-managed the process.

I did order around a dozen rolls the other night from Central Camera - with the quantity discount it was about $7.25 a roll and still in stock.

But, unfortunately, I got an email the next day saying they wouldn't sell it to me at that price - it would be over $9.00 and no discount! I think even B&H honored the normal priced orders before the "gouge" kicked in! But - I went ahead and paid the extra - still less than Dwayne's. 🙁

My understanding is that the U.S. mailers are being discontinued by the end of the year. On other markets it is impossible to buy film separately, so those will have to be honored.
