Kodak 400 UC Samples

A few days ago Bill M. posted about Kodak 400UC being available at Target for cheap. I had already bought a bunch from our local Wal-Mart and I loaded some into my Contax IIa with a 50mm f1.5 Sonnar and I went for a walk about yesterday.

I have posted four samples of this film under different lighting conditions, harsh sunlight, open shade, window light, and a combination of tungsten, flourescent and day light in a small shop. I also tried to get skin tones, the colors red and green as people were commenting on how Kodak film renders these colors differently than Fuji film. I do not have any samples of Fuji film from yesterday as I only carried Kodak 'cause I was keeping it simple.

No earth shaking news here just some real world samples from a mediocre photogarapher.

Hi Wayne,

Your images have much of the same character in terms of colour and contrast that I've experienced shooting 400 UC. I shot a lot of it on a recent trip to Vietnam and have generally liked its look. I'm not a fan of super-saturated Velvia-type films, and 400 UC appeals to me for its natural colours.

I do find it a very hard film to scan, though. I use a Dual Scan IV with a packaged software, and I've tried Vuescan. Does anyone have any tips???

I shot a roll of 400UC that Bill himself gave me last weekend when we got together. I used it to break in my new Olympus XA. Have to say I was very impressed and I'm a confirmed Fuji man! I'll definitely be buying more in the future.

This film has become a favorite of mine as well, since it gracefully handles so many situations. Here are a few recent shots with it; the first with a 28mm Biogon-G and the next two with a Pentax-L (Leica thread mount) 43mm f/1.9...

Last week I poked around the Target store near here and found only Kodak Max. I asked the clerk where they were hiding the 400UC, and she said they'd packed up all the remianing discontinued stuff and trucked it away... 🙁

Err, for what it's worth, that middle shot mirrors my blue pants as I shot the pic. Odd effect? 🙂
