Kodak almost out of bankruptcy

Google and Apple are bidding on the patents, which means they should get their 800mil, or however much loan... So it seems like they should be out of bankruptcy protection in 2013..

Not sure where that leaves their film division though, guess they are still selling..?

That was more about patents than film, but it appears that Lomo is looking at buying the film distribution rights. Kind of hard to say though since everything is kept pretty quiet.

They did find one! Its a group of patent licensing firms consortium led by Intellectual Ventures and RPX Corp. They beat out the bids from Google and Apple. Its big news today.

Let them do whatever they want with the digital patents. Hopefully Kodak can get back to its films root.

A few hundred million might be a bit of stretch, especially if just buying the distribution rights. The coating and slitting has to stay in building 38, no other way around that...

Kodak leadership has said, recently and often, that their future is to "sell its legacy film units and focus on commercial printing services, as part of its plan to emerge from bankruptcy protection."

They have no intention of "getting back to their roots" from what I can tell.

That is good, getting the film business out of kodak's sinking ship just might save it from sinking (at least while on board of THAT ship 🙂

I really doubt that the $$$ from the patent sale will save this sinking ship. It'll buy it some time, but what business can they get into and apply their competitive advantage? they have squandered so many opportunities in the past.

Based on prior analyst valuations that's about $0.25 on the dollar. Oh well, better for you and your "friends" to buy in collusion than to get in a bidding war against each other. That might send prices waaay up: Right to where they're accurate.

They might keep the film division short-term as it is allegedly a profitable division. But it's not the mass market business that they need to remain a large multinational corporation. Hopefully, some Kodak film people with the technical expertise will be able to set up a business making film. This might work if they can get good deals on Kodak's film manufacturing equipment.

Interesting that Kodak is concentrating on printing and imaging; that's what Konica Minolta went into after giving up on the camera and film business.
