Kodak Bankruptcy Implications?

Someone is getting rich somewhere off the back of all this! Google are looking in to it, Google and leica working together.

Bad news for sure. I should have been stocking up. What good is buying up film going to do if the developer goes under too? Ilford stands to gain from this.

🙄 The good parts of Kodak, like film and sensors etc, will be sold off to companies who will use the intellectual rights to continue production. Its what makes capitalism work, even if they end up as niche suppliers. The dead end lines will die. So, no need to panic for most photographers.

Steve I highly doubt that Film will survive the end of Kodak. Capitalism will only see that Kodak couldn't make enough money with film to survive, so film equals bad investment in the capitalists eyes. B&W might survive but not color Film or motion picture film in my eyes a catastrophy for the art of Filmmaking.

Just read an article in the New York Times and Kodak is adamant that they're not considering bankruptcy.

We'll see about that.

But the article did mention that Kodak's hired an outside company to help them with restructuring. That may determine what happens to the company.

If it goes into bankruptcy protection and is anything like the company I worked for that went that way you can expect plant closures, layoffs and those employees at plants still running will have their contracts renegotiated downwards. If this restructuring satisfies the courts and creditors and they come out of protection you still may be able to still get Kodak film. There could also be a round of bonuses for the people who successfully negotiated the restructuring. By that I mean the group of people who after initially driving the bus off the cliff, so to speak, did such a great job of saving the survivors. It is a long process.

Closed at $.78 per share. Ouch.

And I may be panicking but I'm buying up cans of XX in 400ft lengths now. I have 1200 feet so far. About 240 rolls.

Photo apocalypse! Ha.

Inevitable, because their cost structure doesn't fit their revenues.

Anything that is still generating revenues will survive. Nothing to worry about. This isn't about lack of demand of the products, it's about too much overhead.

Interesting.

Kodak makes sensors for Leica. IIRC.

Kodak loses tons of money and is close to bankruptcy.

1+1=2

Leica has record year profits with M9.

M9 uses sensor from Kodak. IIRC.

1+1=2

2+2=? Appears that Leica may already be looking at another vendor for sensors with a new camera....or, possibly buying out Kodak's sensor production capabilities?

Interesting indeed.

Does anyone remember Ilford going through reorganization / bankruptcy a few years back? It is not a sure fire ticket to oblivion for the products. (shareholders are a different situation)

Personally, I sense the film market has become too small to support Kodak, Fuji and Ilford. One of them will bow out in the next few years. This will leave the remainder two companies in a much more viable position.

usually i prefer fuji and colour film...
but for now i shall stock up some tri-x...
and maybe have a tri-x month this october

I haven't checked the latest SEC filings, but the last time I looked it was the film division that was generating profits. The machinery is mostly depreciated and the technology is mature so R&D spending i minimal. Digital and print, on the other hand, have been burning though cash.
