Kodak in Toronto

Thanks for sharing.

The first blogto link is interesting from a family history perspective but the building represents little cultural value and no heritage significance.

From this Eglington Crosstown LRT heritage properties evaluation report from 2013:

http://www.thecrosstown.ca/sites/default/files/pdf/reports/g-culturalheritagedocumentation_0.pdf

Quote:This report evaluated the property...and concluded that it has cultural significance... but is not considered to be a provincial property of provincial heritage significance...

I suspect that the preservation decision was made to tie in the station design to the industrial heritage of the area.
A fair question but at what cost?

Too bad the second article is all oooh-aaah and no critical evaluation of cost and benefit.

Coupla interesting articles about Kodak in Toronto, and building 9, the last remaining building at the former Kodak Heights complex in Mount Denis, Toronto.

The end of Kodachrome and the death of Kodak Heights

Kodak 9 was actually moved back and forth 200 ft recently(ish) so that construction could take place underneath it to integrate it into an upcoming light rail station.

Toronto's iconic Kodak Building 9 just made a big move

Fascinating reading. It's staggering how large Kodak became. 50 tons of coal burned per day at the Canadian site! And just as fascinating at how almost all of that ended up dwindling away.

Being a Japanese company, it is very hard to get stories like this about Fujifilm. I've looked quite a lot over the years and have never come cross huge sites that Fuji once operated and have fallen away to decay. I know that unlike Kodak, Agfa, and others, Fujifilm successfully made the transition way from Film into other industries. But they must have had to have dismantled a lot of their film infrastructure. I can't find any evidence that they have.
