Kodak in trouble?

Yeah it looks a bit dodgy. They have released Q3 results:

Results are improving but still making marginal losses overall, and they also have accumulated deficits from previous years ie if they liquidated the company now and used all their cash & assets to pay all their debts they'd be $213m short. Film segment still made $20m profits, but declining.

They're not far from making profits tho, and this $213 could turn positive quickly.

I don't know if buying some rolls of film everyday we can "save" an Empire like Kodak...i can only tell you that i use almost 1000 meter of Kodak Vision 2 or 3 almost everyday, shooting low budget Movie, Television Serials and Commercials..so maybe we should buy thousands of rolls everyday to cover these quantities. And i notice that almost everything on a Movie Set has a Patents by Kodak...it's amazing but it's true.
So i don't think Kodak will die anytime soon, at least until we continue to shoot Movie and Serials on Film, i don't think it's the roll of tri-x or Portra that it's taking alive the society but maybe the 500 Km of Vision 3 they are selling everyday around the world ^__^

Just my thougth

Remember Kodak also makes film for the motion picture industry. If Kodak goes down what will you be watching?

The motion picture industry needs film, even today. There are benefits to shooting on it, and digital movies worth archiving all get film prints. I think many members here would be surprised as to how many productions don't go digital until post-production.

So, fully agreed. If by some chance Kodak has to excise all of its other divisions to keep movie film alive, it will happen. Actually, I see that as a potential scenario. Just turn the company into movie film and film-related patents and sell it to some studio or investor in Hollywood.

Kodak did the right thing years ago, they saw that film was not the future and changed their focus to digital. Because of that Kodak still exists and hopefully for their employees and investors will continue to exist.

However, a 25% decline in revenue in the Film, Photofinishing and Entertainment group 'driven by continuing industry-related declines' kind of states that Holly and Bollywood needs less film?

The US auto industry is an example of what can happen when you're not paying attention ... at least kodak are actually aware of their situation and will likely sail through it unscathed ... sort of!

US car manufacturers have been blindly building gas guzzling dinosaurs right up until their current financial crisis ... while the rest of the world has been concentrating on smaller more fuel efficient vehicles for a long time now.

FYI, Kodak stock was up 11% today on rumors of a possible takeover. It's a perfect business for a private equity firm to snap up, as it has independent divisions that are easy to evaluate and potentially spin off for more than the current value.

While I'm sure that played some part part in what happened to the US car manufactures the main reason for the current financial crisis is directly related to the steady rise in the cost of their products in relationship to the income of their customer's over the past 30 years or so.
Historically the business plan of the US car manufactures was to have people buy a new car every two or three years. and while this worked great for 40 plus years when people either paid cash or fienced for 2-3 years. its started slowly falling apart when people started requiring four, five and then six year loans in order to be able to afford the monthly payments. This of course wouldn't of been an issue if the manufactures had adjusted their business plan to reflect the new reality but they didn't.
Also the current crisis would of hit much earlier if people hadn't been using their houses as ATMs to buy cars they couldn't afford.
Of course the fact that both manufactures and the UAW made a number of very short sighted decisions during the past 40 years or so also didn't help.
