Hello all.

I am getting a Epson V800 and with it comes a software bundle (Silverfast AI) to which I can add a Kodak IT-8 Target.

About me: I shoot 35mm as well as medium format Tri-X but I also shoot Fomapan and occasionally but rarely Ilford. I am by no means a professional and when I print, it is small postcard size to a big maximum 8X10 prints for my friends. The majority of it is B&W and once or maybe twice a year, a color roll.

But: I am embarking on scanning some seriously large family archives dating to the beginning of the 20th century until the 70’s. Again most are B&W prints but since it is dating from that time, lots and lots of sepia and other “earthy” tones. And of course some color stuff although my folks remained true to B&W for a long time. The subject matter of this archive is family pictures. Some really amazing stuff that I am seeing for the first time and that I absolutely must have a back up for. A truly great history of a Jewish family from pre WW2 Poland, Palestine and, since this early sixties, on and off between Europe and Israel.

My question? Considering my hobby and my archive project, does it make sense for me to invest some extra bucks on the Kodak IT-8 target software?

Thanks for taking the time.

Guy.

I seriously doubt there is any value in the IT-8 target software for your particular project. You older color film is more than likely off color enough that you'll be making your own adjustments that are quite different from those from a standardized test target.

Last time I checked the Silverfast targets were fabricated by http://www.targets.coloraid.de/ - if you own IT-8 enabled software like Vuescan (or a already unlocked version of Silverfast) you can save some money and go straight to the source.

But calibration can not help unless you are dealing with something that adheres to the same standard - in the case of IT-8, well-preserved slides of film types you can get a target for. There never has neen a IT-8 standard for negatives, there can be no targets for faded film (as each film fades differently depending on the storage conditions), and IT-8 did not even start out until some time in the late eighties, so none of your films will be supported. In a nutshell: IT-8 won't do anything for you...
