Kodak Portra 400 UC Results

Wayne: This is a nice film overall, and I will look for its new label then. It is amazingly vibrant for a ASA 400 film. I am used to seeing muddy colors with ASA400 film, and I haven't used such speed color film for quite some time. Film technology seems to have made big jumps. I hope that digital will not kill film though.

Well, 400UC is perhaps the best color film out there right now. Grain of 100 speed, 2 stops more actual speed, saturation without unrealistic results, works for people and nature, and is not "too" expensive (though it's not cheap). And, as I like to say, it scans like a bad-ass. Except for Jano, who has the "C" stands for "cursed."

Yeah, I can't get it or any other c-41 color to scan right for that matter. On the bright side, it leaves me an opportunity to go to Ritz and flirt with the cute gal while she scans for me on the frontier 😀

For that reason alone, film will never die! In my case, the cute girl works at CVS. 😱 My Wolf (Ritz) Camera has a better Frontier.

How can you go wrong? With BW400CN & ULTRA COLOR 400UC available 24/7 at Wal-Mart, CVS, Walgreens, etc., we never had it so good.

I have shoot a few rolls of Kodak Ultra UC 400. I like it. Haven't experienced the over blue saturation though. I had the negs scanned to 2400x3600. (8.9mp) and they showed a little to much color noise. But I was able correct it a bit for small print sizes. It should be scanned to a higher resolution, more equivalent to a 13mp-16mp size, IMO. and not by a lab. But that's all I have right now for conversion.

My few examples are in my RF Gallery listed bellow. Sorry, I used my Canon 1 series film for these with a 50/1.8 prime and no flash. (to many kids RUNNING around to risk my RF getting knocked out by one).

I'm not a fan of Wal-Mart. But, if they will stock it, keep the price right and I can get it at 2am, why not! I just wish they would do the same with the 100UC film.

Just FYI - Regarding the Portra/Ultra debate...I suppose we're all correct. It is now Ultra, it used to be Portra.

Kodak 400UC is one of the two color films I use, Reala being the other.
One of my local Grocery stores was clearing out the 3 packs of 400UC for $5.64
a box. Yeah I bought all they had.

Hi Raid,

I'd heard Leitz lenses 'like' cyan, but that's a bit much! I would not judge this film (or really any film, but especially color negative) on a single, three-year-old sample. I used 400UC some time ago and I recall being very impressed, especially among trees in overcast weather. It's hard to tell if an anomaly like this has to do with film age, a processing issue, scanning and printing issues, etc. If it happens consistently across batches and labs, that's another thing.
