I just recently bought a Kodak Retina IIc featuring the Rodenstock Heligon f:2,8/50mm. What is the opinion on this lens? I notice the Retina isn't that well represented on this site which makes you wonder why. Are there reasons not to expect sharpness from the optics or is it comparable with other glass from the same era? After all it seems to be a Planar-type lens.

Hi, I have a IIc with the 35,50 and 80mm SK lenses and I have never had any complaints as to sharpness. Various forums claim that both the SK and Rodenstock are some of the finest lenses ever made with the Rodenstock holding the the edge. The biggest problem is the really poor viewfinder. I have gotten used to the thing but it is useless in dim or poor light. other than that I really like the thing. Dave

I think a bigger problem for the Retinas around here is that there are too many collectors interested in them which keeps the prices up. I know I prefer my near unknown Agfa Karat 36 (one on ebay right now, 4 hrs left, $10.) for that reason.

The Heligon should be a fine lens and give you excellent results. Enjoy! And post pictures from it!

If it is as good as the Schneider Xenon 50mm F2.8 on my IIc and the F2 on the IIIc, it is a world class lens. I wish to find one in LTM for use on the Canon's and Leica's.
