Decided to make a week long trip to Calcutta at the spur of the moment. Will be there from Thurs next week and I'm looking for any recommendations as to where I can get some interesting street shots.

Any idea on what the crime levels are like there? Any problems toting around 2 cameras slung on my shoulders? Hope I don't become a walking magnet for thieves.

I haven't yet been there but I hear that you may have missed what must have been a centuries old sight there - hand pulled rickshaws (I think tens of tousands of people were employed in this service). I believe the local government banned them from the beginning of this year in an effort to make the place appear more modern and attractive to investors. If you do see any then snap away because they won't be around for long.

Thanks for the tip and link. I'm also in need of a hotel since the one I had a reservation with could not accomodate the extra person who is coming along on the trip. Looking for something around the $60/night range if anyone knows of any. A central area would be preferable.

Thanks

Hi

The Office area know as B.B.D Bag or Dalhousie is the place to be for interesting shots. Lots of street food vendors, old British time buildings. A walk along the river Hoogly starting from Outram Ghat would be interesting. There's a colourful flower wholesale market early in the morning under the Howrah Bridge. There are a whole lot of places where you can take pictures. You can stay at the Fairlawn Hotel, Sudder Street. As for theives, dont walk around in the middle of the night, dont leave your cameras unattended. I have not heard of any camera robberies (I live in Calcutta).

You will definitely get street children following you trying to beg some money off you which can get very annoying. Best thing to do is to carry some candy or toffees as we call and not give them any money.

Hope this helps. PM me if you need any specific information.
