All I need to do now is to shoot a test roll...

22 shots in, I dropped it on the floor of the car. It died... Back to square one :bang:
Edit to update: well... Another wire re-soldered and it's back alive. I'll get good at this at some point, though I'd rather have it behaving as it should

Some of them have stainless steel wires which are a real problem because you can't solder them. But when you get one working, even with the complete auto only feature, there is nothing in its class:

It's not the soldering per sé this time, but what happened is that of the two battery wires one seemed OK. Don't think it is; do a full re-wire, or don't bother. Only the flash wire has a decent survival rate, not normally coming into contact with battery acid.
Oh well. It lives
Now that I know what kills these things though I'd happily get another one to fix up. Not a very difficult repair.

I bought a cheap C35 with a dead meter from a flea market.
One day I opened it up, and took a look at the meter cell.
I went to Maplins [UK electronics store, like RadioShack] and
bought a cheap LDR cell that turned out to be identical.
Replaced the dead LDR with the new one, and it worked a charm !
Worth trying, and not too hard to fit.
PS it is a great camera for a 6 year old !
