Hi, I'm really hoping for some help on this. I bought a Scan Dual IV of the bay and received it yesterday. Of course I'm struggling to get it going on a modern laptop. I downloaded the trial version of Vuescan but can't seem to get it to work. The detection and installation of the scanner when I plug in the USB cable is hit or miss for one, and once it does connect, Vuescan freezes if I try to start it. Vuewscan seems to only start when the scanner isn't properly connected and isn't detected by the computer (and Vuescan kicks out the no scanner connected error).
From everything I've read, Vuescan is supposed to be the magic pill and you just install it and plug in your old ass scanner and it all works. That's the opposite of my experience...:bang:
Any help with what could be wrong/how to make this thing work would be greatly appreciated. I was really looking forward to scanning my own negatives.
Thanks!

Windows 7 pro. Tried 2 USB cables. First one got nothing, second one the system detected and installed Scan Dual IV successfully after a few attempts.
I'll try contacting Ed Hamrick from Vuescan, thanks Gerry.

Robin,
I've been using Vuescan with a ScanDual IV for many years. I'm on my third ScanDual IV and several computers from when I started. If the scanner that you purchased is working, it will work with Vuescan. When My scanner begins behaving badly or the software locks up, neither is common, I shut everything down and restart the computer with the scanner on and then launch Vuescan. That generally gets things going again.

Tom, thanks for the input, although I am now worried my scanner is broken. The auction said it was working, but it is the bay were talking about, so who knows. I'm going to try a few things and if I cant get it going ill try to get a return. Do you know if the trial version is more problematic than the full version of vuescan?
Also, maybe my installation order was wrong...I installed viewscan, turned the scanner on, plugged it in, and then when it didn't load, turned it off and back on, which got the scanner to be detected in windows, but still not detected by vuescan. Should I have the scanner on and plugged in before turning the computer on? I wonder if this thing is sensitive to the order you do everything in.

For my SD4 to operate properly: Computer on, scanner on and then open Vuescan. Usually a couple of prompts about closing film door. I OK that & it is ready for scanning. Turning off, close Vuescan before turning scanner off.

I recall reading that someone with the same problem switched to a shorter
USB cable. Makes liitle sense to me but they claimed it solved the problem.

I'm afraid it's been at least 10 years since I used the trial version so I really do not remember if there is a difference. Scanners can be rather sensitive and it may have broken during shipping. I hope not.
My start up is generally to have the scanner on, then start the computer, then launch Vuescan. I used a MacBook Pro or an IMac, so the Windows environment may be different. Two bits of advise. First, when you have all of your settings the way you like them, close Vuescan then launch it again. Your settings will be remembered. If Vuescan locks up and you need to force it to close, the settings will be lost. Second, when not using the scanner, turn it off and unplug it. My first one burned out just sitting on my desk plugged in. I went to use it one day and it was hot before I turned it on and it no longer worked.
If you have questions, you're welcome to pm me. I usually check in daily.

The image should appear as the negative or slide it being scanned in preview. When the preview is complete you can then apply changes to the image with the software, see the result and then do the final scan.
Do you have the scanner set to do multiple passes? If so, just do one pass to start with. Personally, I never use the multiple pass option.

I've had the full version of Vuescan for so long I may be wrong, BUT I'm fairly certain the trial version is the same as the registered version. You have a fair amount of time before you need to file a complaint with the seller. Send the seller a polite message saying your having issues with the scanner. Contact Rick for help. Work it all out before you give up. I've had sellers return items for extremely simple problems. Both the seller and buyer lose on the shipping. The Minolta is a good scanner. There is also the possibility that bumping around in shipping might have knocked something out of alignment. I would also try it on a friend's computer if you could.

I have been using the IV on a Windows 7 machine for several years now.
The one problem I once had (solved with help here) was that the scanner just all of a sudden disappeared. The problem was a bad connection. Unplugging it from the PC and re-plugging it firmly and solidly into another port fixed it.

Thanks everyone for their help. I think the scanner may be broken, or I'm still doing something wrong. When Vuescan loads, the scanner makes its scanning noises, and when I insert the film holder it cycles the holder out and then back to frame 1, which all seems right. But when I tell Vuescan to scan, it shows the % progress at the bottom but the scanner stays silent. So its like its not actually scanning when I tell it to. Plus I get no image and no file when the "scan" completes.
Anyone else had this issue?
Thanks!

Oh wait, literally just figured it out. The scanner door cant be all the way down, it needs to be up to where its touching the film holder?! :bang: hahahaha it was that simple!

That's the way I felt when I re-seated the cable and it started working again!
