I received an S3 a short time ago ( mentioned in a previous post ), and have been monkeying around with it, seeing if I could get it to work properly. Mechanically, it seems to work fine, but once I put a battery ( weincell equivalent ) in it, I get nothing. The meter indicator doesn't move, and nothing seems to work electronically.

Has anyone had a similar problem, or have any idea what the problem might be? Is the meter broken, or are the electronics just shot?

I had an S3 with the same problem.
All that had been bad really is that the battery compartment was not wired any more, a corroded battery must have 'burned' them. This is a very common problem.

So first I would do is:
open the bottom plate, unscrew the battery compartment to see if it is connected properly.

next thing I did ( though I later found that this was not necessary ) was opening the lens to have access to the light sensitive CDS and measured if it's resistance changed with changing light. It did which meant that the CDS is working properly!

see the thread about my repair: http://www.rangefinderforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=80697
