I'll have a table there if you want to see Voigtlander.

The nearest Starbucks in on the same street (Carson), about 1 1/2 miles West. The hotel across the parking lot usually serves breakfast.

Although not nearly as big as it used to be, I understand it to still be the largest monthly camera show in the US.

Back Alley, I have been seeing Stephen Gandy at Bagnall's camera show all this years, before the show had moved to Carson. He hasn't changed a bit, with his usual eyeglasses and his no non-sense demeanor. 🙂 He is still the boyish looking and adorable camera dealer, I recall, at the time when FILM was king.😉

The old location used to be in Buena Park, where the camera show started in 1983. The show used to occupy two huge rooms. For some reason, the show proprietor, where not informed that Sequioa Club, the old venue for the monthly show, had to be shut down. So, briefly the show had been held in Costa Mesa Indoor Swap Meet-- a short 20-minute drive from its old location. Now, it's permanently held in Carson, California, south of the City of Los Angeles.

There was a time in our photographic lives in Southern California, that we had weekly camera shows, owned and operated by Bargain Camera, another camera show proprietor-- in Santa Monica, Riverside, San Diego and Pasadena.

The Pasedena camera show is still being held second week of each month, if my memory serves me right. I have not been at the Pasadena Show held at the Elk's Lodge for a while. Whle Bagnall's camera show in Carson, California is held 3rd Sunday of each month, except the months of November and December.

I apologize for my ramblings. But, going back to Back Alley's curiosity on how Stephen Gandy looks like, last summer I saw him wearing his khaki shorts and brown sandals, which is typical of Californian men. He hasn't changed a bit, as I had stated earlier. You can easily spot his table, which is usually covered by a purple colored, velvet piece of cloth.

Stephen Gandy is easy to deal with and is always answering questions at the camera show.

Next time I see him, I will ask for his autograph.😀

I haven't been to the Carson show. I used to go to the Buena Park show quite often, but I don't feel like going all the way to Carson. Part of the problem when it was at Buena Park is that the Sequoia Club got the bright idea that they could charge for pakring there. Once they did that they lost a big group of the people that attended simply because they were only going for the fun of it and didnt want to pay for parking and for the show. It became too expensive. The other problem that came up was the people running the show didn't really enforce making sure the people with tables stayed the whole time. As the afternoon got later and later a lot of the people selling would start packing up early, but they were still charging the same rate for the show. You'd show up an hour or two before closing and a good chunk of the sellers had already gone. Another reason for the dip in people coming to the show. They finaly started enforcing the rules and making sure the dealers stayed the whole time, but I think the damage was done between that and the parking fee.

Alas then they moved to Carson and that was the end of the show for me! 🙁

Why would they move something (anything?) from Buena Park to Carson??? To be nearer the casinos??

Speaking of how things used to be -- how many remember the days when Frank's Highland Park Camera was pretty much THE L. A. area shopping place?

Man, I was thinking of going to the camera show today but I totally forgot!


How big is the Carson camera show? I always want to go, but sometimes I think it would just depress me. I'm not sure what I mean by that, I guess I just think its a few tables in a room with a bunch of lonely old guys selling cameras. Does it get busy at all or what is it like?

it's held in a gymnasium sized hall. ~40-50 tables? kinda loud and crowded. the only depressing thing is that i can't ever find what i'm looking for, but that's what ebay is for.

I went to the show today. I don't understand all the animosity towards it's location in Carson -- it is a nice neighborhood and parking, etc. is cheap and easy. It's a breeze to get to on the freeways. The venue was in the Carson Civic Center, a very nice place. I like it.

I met Steve Gandy there and he had a table full of Voigtlander gear. I looked at one of the new Bessa's he had sitting out -- it is clearly a notch up from my Bessa R in build quality. He graciously explained some fine points of lens availability and compatibilithy for the Contax IIa as well (I am in the market for such).

I did not however find any good deals at among the vendors selling used gear. I usually find a few good deals here and there at at the Pasadena show, which is a bit smaller (but similar). Several sellers were unwilling to negotiate at all, which is a major turn-off. There seems to be little awareness that eBay and digital cameras have knocked the bottom out of the film camera market except for the classic stuff that we all adore here. Used SLR bodies were, for instance, about twice eBay prices.
