i have a question regarding which type lab to use. I have basically 2 choices for B&W labs - one develops the dip and dunk method and makes 4X6 prints at a reasonable cost - the other lab develops in tanks by hand.. but 4x6 machine prints too expensive to print the whole roll from that lab.. am i giving up any quality in the negatives using the bigger lab with the dip/dunk method?
thanks,
joanie
the film - t-max 3200 ( shot at 3200 - development pushed 1 stop)
neopan 166 ( shot at 800 - development normal)

Are you planning on having your final image on 4x6? It's probably cheaper and more versitile to go with tank development with contact sheets if that's an option. That was you only will need to enlarge the ones you like from the contacts.

maybe it's time to open a home lab!
film development is really very easy and cheap to do yourself.
you can buy a scanner with the $$ you save.

dip 'n' dunk
dip 'n' dunk
dip and dunk processing for my negatives. And slides. Always. Machines will scratch things every now and then - or on an often occasion. Not to mention, the machines don't care about fine tuning, many of the custom labs who dip and dunk are also careful about chemical balances, timing, temperature., etc.
Here are some shops I use for my work :
Moon Photo in Seattle was the best for black and white, but I do not know if they still exist. Ivey Imaging is decent, but not great. Definitely better than Rainbow photo.
not sure if Chrome 'n' R in Hollywood do any black and white, but they are the best bet in Los Angeles for high quality, custom printing and processing - all chemical, traditional. VERY good to do business with them. They were the last place on the west coast that I know of that does type R prints still, but their paper was running thin last time I checked.
Of course, the best shop, all round, best service, best quality, is The Icon in Los Angeles. They do everything within the day - amazingly fast. I can turn in 4x5 B&W or E6 in the morning and pick it up in the afternoon. When I order prints, no matter the job, they are done in one or two days MAX. Sometimes the same day. Absolutely amazing. ANd the prices are great too.

Joanie I don't think you're giving up quality by using dip'n'dunk, but maybe the opposite. I've used A&I Labs in LA - reasonable prices and good quality.
