I have a couple 20x30 prints i'm putting in a gallery show in a couple weeks. The gallery wants me to describe the type of prints they are, like "gelatin silver print", or "chromogenic" for example.. but they're not traditional darkroom prints, I got them from mpix, they're on the "true black and white" paper. What would I say that sounds at least semi-classy?

I get my color prints from MPix, and I label them "archival inkjet print".

On a side note, I don't put labels of any kind next to the photos themselves in a gallery show...I just have a sheet, mounted on foamcore usually, off to the side with the names of all the pictures on it, and I put the technical info there.

If they are made by inkjet, you could use the somewhat pretentious Giclée print. But I always thought that "true black and white paper" meant they the prints were made on silver gelatin through use of either a digital negative, or an electro-optical printer. If that were the case, then "silver gelatin" could be used to describe them.

Or if you just want to sound all post-modern call 'em ink jet prints.

I was just researching the paper that mpix uses and it seems the 'true black and white' is made by ilford and is exposed with lasers then processed in regular darkroom chemicals.. at least that's what i've been able to figure out so far... 😕

Personally, I am just hyperconscious of the effort to avoid saying "inkjet"...when many of the nicest prints made today are made with inkjet printers. It's a bit of an eye-roller to call it one thing on a gallery label and something else in the studio.
