Neither Van Hasbroeck nor Lager mention this. However, the first IIIg-cameras had slightly different winding knobs, all knurled, not partially smooth.

The IIIg had the following speeds: 1/1000, 1/500, 1/250, 1/125 etc, while the IIIf had the old speeds: 1/1000, 1/500, 1/200, 1/100 etc, so I think the story is a myth.

perhaps they meant that the internal shutter blinds, drum,and other shutter internal parts of the new 3G model were fitted into these late 3F's

Actually many internal parts are interchangable between various Leica models. You need those part lists that were made by the factory in the early 1960's to study them. Some are available online: http://www.pentax-manuals.com/manuals/service/leica_iiif.pdf

Nothing too unusual about Leicas bearing parts that were supposed to be associated with a different model. Near the end of a production run, some extra parts could wind up on another model. And the reverse could also be true. They might run out of a part, and use the one from the next model. Not too long ago, I saw a IIIc with a IIIf winding knob! I almost bought it!
