Last week I went for an SLR

How neat! I didn't know you had SLRs Raid. Somehow you seem more human. :D :D

Back when I was looking for a "good" camera, while in Vietnam, I scanned the PX catalog looking for the best camera for the best price. I considered the Canon along with the Nikon and Minolta. I was turned off to the Canon as I thought they disguised supposed added versatility as a marketing ploy to make more moeny. You had to buy separate some things the others built in.

Money was a factor as was brand loyalty. I had previously owned a Yashica movie camera so I ended up with the Yashica TL Super. It was a good camera. I often wonder how things would have been different if I had gone for the Nikon or Minolta. Still, I am happy. Buying into screw mount lenses allowed me to move on to the Fujica while in Korea. I still prefer screw mount to bayonet.

Still, looking back, I realize the Canons were also very good cameras. I just thought they were more expensive if you wanted to expand. Silly since I didn't expand beyond a basic camera and 50mm lens for several years. Go figure.

I am "very human"!
I have Canon Pellix, A1, F1N, F1N, F1n, T90, T90, Nikon FE2, F2, FG, Nikkormat, Rolleiflex SL35, SL35, SL35E, Pentax ME super, Super Program, MX, Spotmatic, Spotmatic F, and many other cameras, plus some great lenses.

I used to have one of those Vivitar 24mm lenses. It was a fantastic lens. I had the TX version with interchangeable adapters mounted in a Leicaflex T-4 adapter. Yes the TX and T-4 adapters were pretty much interchangeable. They never made a Leicaflex TX adapter and using stop-down metering wasn't an issue because I mostly use a seperate incident lightmeter anyway.

Al,
I bought a Canon 24mm 2.8 brand new and at the time when SLR lenses were expensive ... for $79 from New York. With Vivitar lenses, you can tell who made those. Right?

I haven’t heard anyone mention the Canon Ftbn which is a tank that takes great photos & was my first SLR. After a year, are so of lusting for the F1, I traded my Ftbn & many DOLLARS for a F1 (the version with plastic tipped advance) which was soon followed up by the purchase of an EF for backup. The EF was a wonderful camera & ahead of it’s time IMO even though it ate batteries like candy.

For awhile it looked like Canon would remain my cup of tea until a trip to my favorite camera store. I left that store with a brand new Nikon F2S mounted with an 85/1.8 jewel of a lens. The F2S was followed by a F2SB, F2A, F2AS, F3, then back to a F2SB which I still have along with a F2A & some early F’s in various configurations.

Not long ago I purchased another Ftb but this time a beautiful black paint Ftb w/50f1.4 ssc and later I found a minty EF (I still have a stash of 625’s to feed it). Currently I’m looking for a well cared for F1 to go with the other Canons. It’s been hard to pursue these SLR luxuries while still trying to buy more glass for the M2 & IIIc's…:D

Raid,

I hope you know that was said tongue in cheek, hence the emoticons.

That is an impressive list of cameras. How do you liike the Pellix? I don't see them talked about much any more. Some used to think the lack of a self return mirror was worth the loss of light, others thought it was too much. I never saw one that I could hold or check. They did take all the normal Canon lenses did they not?

The Pellix would be good to use with the Canon 19mm FL which requires mirror lock-up. Think of it as an SLR with continuous mirror-lock-up but having a viewfinder, without mirror slap sound or vibrations. The EOS RS has a modern version of the pellix idea. I got the camera at one time and I just kept it. In fact, I kept all my SLR cameras and lenses.
