Helmut Newton Sumo. The reprint by taschen that came out in Sep 09. I have the 6th book now and this is still not error free. The 5 books before had anything from printing mishaps to being cut wrong. Be careful when you are interested in this book and check every page. they seem to have a massive quality problem. I received the 6th book free of charge so there is no way I could complain about this one because there is no financial harm.

Apart from that the book is very good.

I just ordered

1)Driftless: Photographs from Iowa, by Danny Wilcox Frazier

and
2) The photographer, graphic novel about Afghanistan in the 1980's (doctors without borders, Lefevre)

For my birthday (this summer) I got this:

page_fp_jazzlife_25_07_0809041505_id_169757.jpg

took this from an advertisement:

"In 1960, photographer William Claxton and noted German musicologist Joachim Berendt traveled the United States hot on the trail of jazz music. The result of their collaboration was an amazing collection of photographs and recordings of legendary artists as well as unknown street musicians.

The book Jazzlife, the original fruit of their labors, has become a collector's item that is highly treasured among jazz and photography fans. In 2003, TASCHEN began reassembling this important collection of material— along with many never-before-seen color images from those trips. They are brought together in this updated volume, which includes a foreword by William Claxton tracing his travels with Berendt and his love affair with jazz music in general. Jazz fans will be delighted to be able to take a jazz-trip through time, seeing the music as Claxton and Berendt originally experienced it."

There are certain books that I kick myself for not having bought when they were new (affordable). One of those is the New Topographics catalog. Luckily, because of the new show (about the old show) at George Eastman House, a reissue of the book seems to be on the way. Amazon has it available for preorder. Looks like the show will travel to San Francisco next year, too.

Cheers,
Gary

Picked up Hanri Cartier Bresson/Walker Evans " Photographing America 1929-1947"
Interesting book, some "new" shots by HCB and also by Evans.
Also found a tiny book "Andre' Kertez" "The Early Years". Small, about 3.5" square book with contacts from his early work with glass plates and film. Jewel like quality to them.
It was in the "Cheap bin" for $5 at Elliot Bay Books in Seattle.

i've preordered last night the reedition of the book called Sumo (on sale october 15th), in a much appropriate format than the original: Helmut newton - Helmut newton
