I've got a few of these... Inferno, In the Balkans, Invasion 68, Wonderland...

I love wonderland, bought two. Inferno is beautifully printed, like Davidson's Circus, and takes a good portion of an afternoon to get through. Invasion 68 I thought was edited notably well, and does his gritty pictures from the period justice. In the Balkans has the same feel as Wonderland... If you like one, you'll like the other.

New on my shelf: Telex Iran by Gilles Peress. Groundbreaking, IMO.

Just for fun, here are the books on my wishlist, maybe someone has some comments:

- Bruce Gilden "Wonderful Catastrophe"
- Michael Kenna "Retrospective" (any of them)
- Rena Effendi "Pipe dreams"
- Josef Koudelka "Invasion '68" (been after this book for ages, no clue why I still don't have it)
- Nikos Economopoulos "In the Balkans"
- Thomas Dworzak "Kavkas" (Sooo looking forward for this book to come out!!! OMG!!11!!)
- James Nachtwey "Inferno"
- Larry Clark "Tulsa"
- Jason Eskenazi "Wonderland" (actually, I don't think I'm gonna bother with this one, doesn't seem to be my cup of tea)
- Bruce Davidson "Brooklyn Gang" (yeah right, that book costs like 1 billion Great British Pound Sterlings. Plus I got "Outside Inside" and that's all the Davidson I might ever need).

.... and adding more to the list. Love photography books. I've kicked GAS in favour of BAS.

Thanks Ryan. Based on your other recommendations I think I'll trust your taste and check this one out. Especially since I want to go shoot in Iran by the end of the year (would be fool not to, something weird happened and Iran decided to drop visa requirements for a few countries, including mine).

I finally ordered Jason Eskenazi's "Wonderland" online from a German book dealer in the night from sunday to monday.
...
Kind of hilarious, but as long as they come over with the book

Quoting myself to come up with the results - they don't have it in stock. :bang::bang::bang::rolleyes: Already figured that by their very confusing online-shop description of the book which was changed after I emailed them first. They changed it from "delivery in 6-10 days" to "publisher can not ship at the moment".... gnaah... so I'll go for the more expensive variant and order the 2nd edition of "Wonderland" from a small gallery shop in Berlin.

(sorry for "hijacking" this thread for my blabla about this crap with the dealer)

Can you give me any information on the German book dealer and the small gallery shop in Berlin? My girlfriend currently lives in German so I can buy some book through her.

Thanks before!

W.E. Smiths - photographs 1934-1975 and HCB - Photographer have both turned-out to be good purchases. The former is a bit more to my personal taste, however. In either case, nice printing.

The small gallery is named Kominek in Berlin. They have mostly books by Scandinavian and Baltic photographers.

The big online dealer is.... I'm not sure if I can name it, because there were legal issues in a German forum where a dealer sued the admin because of bad propaganda against the dealer.

Happy Birthday Frida Kahlo!

Happy Birthday Frida Kahlo!

Have you seen the Google search engine home page today? I coincidentally received a pre-ordered copy of the book Frida Kahlo - Her Photos from Amazon this morning, a collection of 401 photos from her private archive. At first glance it looks really interesting; a look at family, friends, lovers, painting models, influences and the times she lived in. I'm really looking forward to visiting Mexico City and her museum later this year! It's printed in Kowloon and the print quality is really excellent. Published by Editorial RM Verlag, the English edition ISBN is 978-84-92480-75-3. The book appears to have a serial nr., mine is # 116.

Yesterday I received:
"Accommodating Nature-The Photographs of Frank Gohlke".
Arrived today:
"The Dawn of the Color Photograph-Albert Kahn's Archives of the Planet" and "Mike Disfarmer-Original Disfarmer Photographs".
Arriving soon, "Bruce Davidson: Outside Inside".

I haven't been on a book binge for a number of years, so I guess I'm due... now I'm broke again, c'est la vie.

Being broke is a bummer, but being broke with a lot of books to peruse is not a hardship at all. Amazing how long you can live on pasta and cheap stuff - and look at pictures.
The Kahn collection is amazing. Consider that the plates used had a nominal speed of between 0.1-1 asa - and that they have survived for a century!
The Davidson books are stunning - so far the best books of 2010 in my collection.
Enjoy them all.

I recently bought Stephen Shores "The Nature of Photographs" and "Uncommon Places". I don't yet like his writing all that much, but Uncommon Places makes more than up for it.

Tonight I scored a very good condition, near new, first edition copy of David Hamilton's "The Fantasies of Girls". Cost me just 9,000 yen or about US$100. There are used book traders selling this for as much as US$500. So I am absolutely happy.

My latest purchase is a large hardcover book of mostly fashion portraits by Patrick Demarchelier (self-titled) - lots of great medium format images, if you are into portraiture/fashion and figure studies.

Friedlander
ISBN 0-87070-344-7
Quarto, 480 pp
Author: Peter Galassi
Publisher: The Museum of Modern Art
Pub: 2005

A sprawling document of biographical info, bibliographic info and tonnes of BW photos in 480pp. The book probably weighs in at 10+ lbs . It covers most of Friedlander's life as a photographer, includes an essay on Friedlander by Richard Benson

The Americans landed yesterday (the book, of course), weirdly, they came from Canada and it took them more than 6 weeks, because the canadian post took precautions and shipped them to europe by a ship instead of a plane in case that Eyjafjallajökull or some of her cousins became angry again.
I only managed to ran trhough some of the photos, but it seems to be a very nice and inspiring book for me. And beautifully printed by Steidl.

And as a birthday present from my wife I recieved The American Wilderness from A.Adams. Some of the photographs are just staggeringly beautiful.

Just got the Davidson book, 'Outside, Inside'! A gorgeous and beautiful...production. :)
