Thank you both. I actually do not have a problem with huge books, on the contrary, I like them, but as long as they're heavy on photos / light on words. For example I find Nachtwey's Inferno is absolutely fantastic in terms of layout and quality (and size).

I'll check the "Aperture". Local library is an interesting suggestion, just not sure about the selection of photobooks.

I looked at a preview on photo-eye.com.

Wow, really brings it home. I've never had a preview move me like that one did.

The Aperture book is excellent. Really, it's THE Arbus book to get. I got my copy back in the early 80's. It meets your criteria. Nice big photos and easy to spend time with.

Hi guys, could you please recommend me a good Diane Arbus book? Preferebly something that's available here.
Quirks: I prefer a book with a good clean layout and good print quality (and of course good photos). Don't care about text and stories. For example, as far as browsing photography goes I'm not a huge fan of Frank's "Looking in..." and Breson's "Scrapbook", good books, but Im don't pull them out when I simply want to enjoy photos (which is most of the time).

Yesterday I had a great deal at a local used book shop: while I was browising with no clue through the shelves, I saw a brand new copy of Salgado "Workers" ... it was priced just € 40,00 but I didn't have enough money with me, luckily I was with a friend of mine who lended me the money!
I'm very happy because - beside the price - "Workers" was on my wish-list since long ago,

Just got this a couple of weeks ago, myself. Nearly 200 photographs. All variations on the same theme. One that can by traced back to some much earlier work. The framework of the car becomes a riff over which friedlander creates seemingly endless innovative solos.
Sparse and simple design with no text, except for a short excerpt from a Jim Harrison novel and some snippets of song lyrics quoted at the beginning and end of the book (on pages colored in the metallic green and blue of 1960's Mustangs).

Been bouncing back and forth amongst a few new books of writings on photography recently.

Thoughts on Landscape, Frank Gohlke (posted on this before).
Photography After Frank, Philip Gefter (Compilation of his NY Times reviews).
The Pleasures of Good Photographs, Gerry Badger.
Also, The Ongoing Moment, Geoff Dyer.

Haven't been able to get into the Dyer, but the others are all really good.

Photographers I wish would write more essays... Leo Rubenfien, Tod Papageorge, Paul Graham.

Wow, really brings it home. I've never had a preview move me like that one did.

Thanks for mentioning this book, ordered a copy. I attended a lecture Eugene gave in Boston about 18 months ago, discussing "The Blue Room". I liked this work very much, and hearing his commentary was great. This image really grabbed me:

At the end of the lecture, he previewed "War is Personal" which was still a work in progress at that time. WOW! Incredibly moving - there were tears flowing in the audience, and some had to get up and leave. It was presented as a video of the photo(s) that roamed over the image and it was absolutely eerie and emotive.

I'll never forget this image:

I had a chance to thank Eugene later that evening, and a friend took this of Eugene and I. (Underexposed and poorly processed TriX - as least it's obvious this isn't digital eh? 😉 )

Diane Arbus' Aperture Monograph has arrived (thanks all for the tip!) and I'm dissapointed to find out that I don't seem to be entirely into her work. Some really great individual photographs, but the whole series leave me luke-warm. To be honest I just flipped through the book, will have to digest it better once I get home, hopefully it will grow on me.


The next book I'll get will probably be Sally Mann's "Immediate Family".

John Gossage, The 32 Inch Ruler/Map of Babylon.

This is a beautiful book. No surprise if you are familiar with his others.
Actually, sort of 2 books in 1, divided in the middle. Flip the book over to start the second title from the back cover of the first. The dust jacket is even printed on 2 sides and can be reversed to display the second title.

The 32 Inch Ruler is all images from his neighborhood in D.C.
Map of Babylon is broader, at least in geography if not so much in subject matter or style. The familiar vs. the foreign.

Glad you're finally getting it! It is a beast at 22 lbs weight... Actually, I'm in two minds about the book, I'd be interested to hear what you think.

Peter FWIW.. I've a copy sitting beside my desk at this moment. It's in it's shipping carton and is about 20x20x12 inches weighing in at about 25 lbs.

My point is these two volumes are a major physical commitment to reading. Something I've not done on this scale before. Davidson is worth the two books but it's a physical commitment to pick up a volume to read and look in depth.

I'll have to find a coffee table with room and pointedly sit down and slowly go thru the book. It's not made for casual readership.
