Daido Moriyama's 'The World Through My Eyes"
Typical black and white Japanese photo book, bleed images, two-page spans across the gutter, muddy-looking printing, odd size but an excellent monograph, especially for the first-time/one-time buyer of Moriyama's work. Over 200 photos spanning his career. Includes the famous 'Stray Dog' image and in interview.

for those interested in Eugene Atget's photographic work it is the subject of a book by Christopher Rauschenberg (yes that Rauschenberg) titled "Paris changing: revisiting Eugene Atget's Paris". The book is a generous sized quarto with excellent plates by Atget on the left leaf and on the opposing right page the plate shot by Rauschenberg. Rauschenberg took the concept of reshooting some of Atget's perspectives and showing the timelessness of Atget's Paris. He includes a map of Paris with the appropriate image and the location of the Atget image he is revisiting. All the work is in BW and the print quality is up there with some of the best books I have seen.

Atget is one of my photographic heroes and this looks fascinating. Great.

Jan, thanks for that pointer. Amazon UK has a "look inside" and I love the way he has not tried in every case to copy the exact Atget shot but presents a complimentary one. Christmas list methinks.

Just finishing Walker Evans -The Hungry eye.
Looks like "Works" may be on the list for the future ... thanks Peter.
About to start Willy Ronis - a Taschen publication.

That one I bought, too, but some time ago. I only recently learned to appreciate it. A very good book.

I`d agree with that Martin .
Pity that some of the pics are a bit small but my kind of stuff.
This thread is costing me.
I already had a bad book habit before I took up photography for the second time.

"The Children" by Sebastiao Salgado... paid 5 EUR on the flea market, in excellent condition...

You're welcome Michael. I have that Willy Ronis - wonderful stuff.

OK, my fourth and last Walker Evans book this year, Walker Evans: Lyric Documentary, Steidl 2006, ISBN 3-86521-022-8. This is a first edition copy with brilliantly reproduced plates by Steidl and bought from a regular bookseller; apparently the first edition is still widely available. The book contains his seminal images from 1935-1937, I think that's all I need to say. I'm so glad I found Walker Evans this year.

A recent birthday saw me receive three books that I had wanted for some time:
Edouard Boubat - Bernard Boubat + Genevieve Anhoury
Personal Best - Elliot Erwitt
Earthlings - Richard Kalvar

Regards
Harry

@ Lawrence & ChrisLivsey, if you enjoy what Atget did you'll enjoy this book. The images are slightly larger than I'm used to seeing and the print quality is excellent. As Chris notes it's not a reproduction from the 'exact same' PoV but it's the same PoV except in a few cases which he wanted to illustrate other aspects of Atget's work in Paris.

I don´t know "Uncommon Places", but I like the non-decisiveness (uh-oh) of "American Surfaces".

Oddly enough "Uncommon Places" seems to both have been evolved from "American Surfaces" and be the opposite at the same time. For me, it's a great book, somewhere in the area of "American Prospects" and "Sleeping by the Mississippi".

How about the new Misrach book - "Destroy this memory"? Turns out, after much thought, I absolutely hate it. But please, convince me otherwise. I do like Misrach in general.

The habit gets worse ...just started Street Photography Now.
A first I thought that it might be to modern for my taste but it`s well written and there is some interesting stuff in there.
It doesn`t end there though.
I didn`t know about the Cappa book until Petronious mentioned it so I`ve put it on order.
Birthday present.
Hoping that there`s going to be lots of contact sheets in it.
I love looking at contact sheets :)
