Finally got round to ordering Election Eve and the recent reprint of Masahisa Fukase's Ravens.
As a reviewer on Amazon said, it seems that the steep price Mack is charging for the latter book is on account of its previous scarcity and cult status, rather than its cost to produce. Looking forward to receiving it all the same.
I also received Koudelka The Making of Exiles as a Christmas present. There may have been a tip-off involved

It's outstanding!
Agree. My favourite photo book. IMO it is the modern Australian version of "The Americans".

Election Eve has been on my next book to buy list for a while now, how are those who have it enjoying it? (I'm really looking for a slight push over the edge)
My latest addition is Sunlanders by Sean Lotman, an xmas present from my lovely wife. http://www.bemojake.eu/Sunlanders_description.html

I've heard Sam say:- Gardeners say there is too much photography and Photographers say too much gardening so I must have got it just right.
A master of composition, so much to learn from here.

It's early days, as they say, but I'm a teeny bit underwhelmed. The photographs I was already familiar with from other books (for example, there is a selection of about ten from Election Eve in the excellent Whitney retrospective book) are, I guess, the highlights

I recently picked up two books I've wanted since my early days in photography, both new editions of photo classics--Ralph Gibson's "The Black Trilogy", his first three self-published books from the 70's combined in one volume, and Josef Koudelka's "Gypsies", his first long term project from the 60's and 70's.
Gibson's books are superb. I've seen all the photos before but it's great to have them collected as they were originally printed. The only negative thing about the single volume edition is that it's paperback instead of hardbound. I think I recall the original books were paperbacks as well but this edition really deserved a nice cloth cover.
"Gypsies" is, of course, a classic. Again, I have one negative quibble. Several of the photos run across the gutter, something I despise. This wasn't necessary since several other horizontal photos were printed as fold-outs, making the transition line less of a distraction.
About "Election Eve", the photos are typical Eggleston pictures of nothing particularly outstanding. He's a master of the mundane, making us look closely at subjects and scenes to which we normally wouldn't pay much attention. "Election Eve" is an early project and it's a little uneven but Eggleston has a great sense of form and I love his work.

Anyone else interested in this? Seems like a pretty bold undertaking (I don’t mean that in a negative way). I look forward to checking it out despite the price and the fact that I never really could get into The Ongoing Moment.

from the publisher's description...
"Dyer takes the viewer/reader on a wildly original journey through both iconic and unseen images from the archive, including eighteen previously unpublished color photographs. The book encompasses most of Winogrand’s themes and subjects and remains broadly faithful to the chronological and geographical facts of his life, but Dyer’s responses to the photographs are unorthodox, eye-opening, and often hilarious. This inimitable combination of photographer and writer, images and text, itself offers what Dyer claims for Winogrand’s photography—an education in seeing".

A used copy of "Winogrand: Figments From The Real World".
The introduction essay by by John Szarkowski is essentially a mini-biography of Winogrand. Szarkowski's eloquence prose, as usual, explained Winogrand's photography techniques (e.g., Winogrand's infamous tilting of the frames) and quotes ("I photograph to find out what something will look like photographed.)

A 2013 monograph from Bokforlaget Max Strom. I was delighted to discover this book on a recent trip to Los Angeles. I was also surprised that I'd never heard of Petersen before. Highly recommended.

One night a week or so ago I was reading about Father Frank Browne, an Irish Jesuit priest who having taken the advice of his superiors, took the last known photo of the Titanic as he was leaving the ship at it's last stop off the coast of Ireland.
The next day I received as a late Christmas gift:
Frank Browne a life through the lens

PF his uncle was the local bishop, Bishop of Cork, and gave him a ticket on the maiden voyage, but just from Southampton to Cork. So he took the last photo and photos on board.
That is a wonderful book. I love the photo of seminarians skating, and many others.

The photographs I was already familiar with from other books (for example, there is a selection of about ten from Election Eve in the excellent Whitney retrospective book) are, I guess, the highlights. I haven't spent much time with the book yet but I get the sense that the quality is a little uneven and Eggleston is on better form in the earlier part of the sequence. The book feels nice and weighty (and the cover is nicely embossed
) but I'm not 100% sure the print quality is quite up there with Steidl's best Eggleston books. The colour certainly has less pop and contrast than in the equivalent photos in the Whitney book just mentioned but it may be that the new book better represents the original and Eggleston's intentions.
I hadn't heard of Lotman or this book but it certainly looks interesting.
Thanks Ian,
Very informative. The only Eggleston book I've had is Guide, and an exhibition at NGV last year. I wonder if the printing was done to replicate the original, if it is a copy of the original edition or if they had the slides to print from again?
I was tossing up between Election Eve and the smaller version of Democratic Forest. Might try and hunt down a copy of Democratic Forest.

I think the single volume Democratic Forest has gone out of print and online sellers are asking £150-ish for it. Interestingly, the boxed 10 volume set is still available and usually discounted by the likes of Wordery at around £250. I have been tempted by both editions (though not the single volume at current prices) but am seriously space constrained and, as good as he is, I think it is possible to have enough Eggleston.
