Book Review: “Photographers’ Sketchbooks” by Stephen McLaren and Bryan Formhals - ERIC KIM
I recently picked up a copy of “Photographers' Sketchbooks", an excellent book written by Stephen McLaren (co-author of “Street Photography Now”) and Bryan Formhals (founder of LPV magazine and the popular Tumblr: Photographs on the Brain). Alongside “The Photobook: A History Volume III” by...

I'm planning on putting this in the Classifieds shortly if anyone is interested.

Unbelievable, a whole book full of "Swooshes!" Lovely!I just received the wonderful Sirens book by Rachel Talibart (limited edition of 75). It comes with a nice print which will be off to the framers soon.

Iain McGilchrist. The Master and His Emissary. The updated/expanded edition. First published 2009. Recommended by a client of mine a year or two ago. Amazingly I think I remember who, the son of one of my university teachers.
McGilchrist is a psychiatrist neuroscientist. The premise for this dense and deep exploration of the structure and function of the brain, and beyond, is to address the question of why the brain consists of paired hemispheres. He moves beyond the familiar left brain right brain half truths which many of us are familiar with. It is a remarkable work it is clear, only started it late last night.
There’ll be resonances for photographers, but you’d need more than that to press on through the hundreds of pages of this book. I think it will be worth it nevertheless.

A fascinating book telling the story of an iconic photograph and providing the contact sheets and incidental shots taken as the group were assembling. Highly recommended. I'll post something separately about the documentary film that was made about the photo.

I've backed off buying photo books recently. Too many instant classics and too many repackaged great photos. But mainly, no more space to store and display photo books. But I still buy books, only now it's just novels to read on Kindle. Really into Haruki Murakami recently. Working my way up to 1Q84...slowly.

Berenice Abbott's portrait of Maine. It was after her time, but we owned a place in Blanchard Maine where she lived for a while. The grave in the Blanchard cemetery next to the lilac bush is hers. The house at the crossroads in Blanchard is where she lived before she moved to Monson, just up the way. We were friends with a lady who was her housekeeper. She had a lot of famous and well known people “from away” as guests and her lifestyle was unusual for this small village, but she was accepted for who she was.

I spent time in Tbilisi following the '92-'93 Georgian-Abkhazian war some 25 years before Parr published this book and see that it has not changed much. It is a beautiful city and a photographer's heaven, thanks for sharing.
