Does not mean we will ever c it for real..but still interesting that Sigma is not the only one to patent a foveon sesnor type. This one has five layers, standard RGB plus ir and uv.

and Sony has a Lytro style sensor coming too... are they ripping these smaller companies off or were these in the works already?

The patent explicitly states it to be Foveon derived - Canon will have to (cross)license the underlying patent, if they want to implement it themselves. Or they may merely license it to Sigma.

A certain number of patents never make it --> into a real product for a particular company X. They are used however instead as bargaining chips or patent licensing fees or to keep company Y from developing in a certain direction detrimental to company X future plans by holding a patent which forces company Y to negotiate w/ company X. Some patents are way ahead of its time (no way to create the actual product yet).
