Latest QL17 Project and Spare parts

Hi,
The latest GIII Ql17 project has been finished. I am generally very happy with it apart from one detail. I had to use Jon's method of removing the middle element and you can see the result of the holes. Picture attached

As a result of this and a couple of others, I have a "new" QL19 and another GIII QL17 as donor cameras if anyone is desparate for spares.

Neat! I am usually interested in donor camera parts. How is the rear element you have left? (I have another one in need of a lens transplant and I find I have enough good parts save the rear element...I'll consider any/all other glass, however).

No joke - that's the only thing that's missing from the busted canonet ql17 GIII i had. The rest are either bent back into its place or were compatible with the canonet 28N i had. Like the vf/rf glass window.

I have been looking for a QL17 or 19 rewind crank. However, not the GIII type model but the original one with rapid wind film advance lever on the bottom. The rewind crank is different from the later models. What kind of QL19 do you have?

Hi Paul,
It's the Pre GIII one, ie the first of the small ones. No good I'm afraid

I would be interested in the rangefinder glass for the QL19 if you have a spare. I have the smaller bodied one. Found it in a thrift store in pretty good shape but there is an ugly crack in the glass. Let me know if you have one and how much.

Speaking of spare parts.. I am looking for some of the very small flat head Phillips screws that are used on the ql17 cameras. Are there any of those about I would like to get a few for spares. I happen to be missing two on my recently acquired 65 ql17.

Anyone here have information on adjusting the vertical alignment of the rangefinder on an older (1st version) of the ql17.

I have cleaned the inside of the rangefinder lenses, avoiding the mirrors and gently blew out any dust. everything is nice and bright now. I used very small foam tipped swabs and an optical cleaner. While outside checking my work I noticed the vertical alignment is out by a small but noticeable amount.

Any advice on how one adjusts the vertical?

Mistake on this last post. somehow I was allowed to re-enter it. :bang:

Now that I have the vertical rangefinder adjustment done, I have discovered that the frontmost ring on the lens is loose and that the ASA lever is no longer moving.

I had to chuckle, since it seemed like a set of cascading failures (not quite that bad).

Are the two things related(the front ring and ASA)? And, how do I tighten that front ring?

OK- I am not I sure if I have the correct tool for this job. I tried to use a rubber dam to tighten down that front bezel. Would that be the black ring at the very front of the lens, that says "Canon Lens SE...?"

OK- actually used a caliper to get that thin ring off. No scratches.

I found two screws completely loose and rolling around in there, which answers a question I had earlier today "what's that, that sounds like a small part rolling around?".

I can't see a third screw. More Later.

I think this camera has been apart before.

Well, at first I could not get to the two loose screws. They would roll out of sight, sort of under the front lens group. Then I pulled together enough courage to grab the front lens group carefully with a rubber pad and carefully screw it out. I was able to get the screws at that point.

However- curiosity grabbed me by the nose and made me look under the ASA ring. I put everything back (I thought) tightened the screws, replaced the CDS plate and put on the bezel and the threaded bezel ring.

Now the shutter speed seems to be stuck at 1/60 of a second and the shutter speed ring rotates as far as 1/125 of a second and stops there.

I will have to get back into it after dinner.

I hate to say it but you are on the slippery slope now and nothing can save you! 😱
Once you have fixed your first camera, all these cheap "for parts" ads catch your eye and suddenly you are into a GAS attack. That's how I ended up with so many Canonets even though I am trying to thin them a bit now 🙄

Kim- it's too late, that started months ago when I found my first Canonet 28 for $7 US. Then my first Electro. Then My first Fed. Then... oh heck...

In all the earlier cases nothing involved the lens assembly. Fixing a battery comartment here and there. Replacing foam... Simpler things.

Now if I live through My Ql experience, I will be happy. Didn't pay much for it, but I want badly to have this one as close to perfect as I can get it.

Meanwhile, My wife called the office to tell me my latest acquisition has arrived-- An Argus C-44 with a full-on leather shoulder bag. I wonder that horrors await me.

How much of the front have you taken off? I found it quite tricky to get all the interlinks and pins in the right place the first time I took the front of. I have a couple of early QL19 in pieces at the moment. I will try to post a couple of pictures later. I am at work at the moment but will sort it when I get home.
