Hello forum,

I have purchased an Epson R-D1 about 2 months ago, and in the first month, everything worked as expected. The camera did not have the firmware upgrade yet, so I updated it, still it kept working. Today, I picked up the RD-1 after one month of non-use, just to find out the LCD stopped working. I tried turning the camera on and off, and replaced the battery by another fully charged one, still no luck. Then I thought that maybe some software setting is messed up, and that updating the firmware again may fix this. Strangely, when I try updating the firmware, the LCD comes up again! So the LCD is definitely working, it's just that it does not come up in normal operation mode. Unfortunately, as the firmware is already at the latest version, updating it will fail, and this won't fix my LCD issues.

Or could just the LCD button be broken? Is there another way to turn on the LCD than the top button? Have you experienced something similar with your Epson? Do you know any reliable repair facilities in Germany that could fix this? Your help is greatly appreciated.

Regards
mercury

LCD screen not working

There have been rare reports of the LCD screen dying: it simply stops working.

Solution

This may be fixable yourself if you're happy to dismantle your camera and have some knowledge of electrical circuits; otherwise, the camera will need to be sent off to Epson. Steve’s Camera Service Center, based in the USA, have experience of servicing and repairing the Epson R-D1 and may also be able repair the camera.

The most common reason for this fault is a blown internal fuse or a faulty switch on the LCD swivel mechanism, or a combination – the latter can cause the former.

Thank you all for your hints. Unfortunately, until now nothing was of any help. The LCD turns on for the firmware update, but does not come up in normal operation. I have an original Epson and a 3rd party battery, and both suffer from the same problem. It does not even matter whether the batteries are fully charged or half-empty.

I may get another new and original Epson battery, or I may just send it in for service in a few days. I'll report back how it all worked out.

if you can stand to be away from your rd1 for a about 5 weeks, send it to dirk at japancamera. he can arrange for epson to do an over haul on the entire camera...good as new...mine came in under 300 bucks. (price varies according to work needed)
