I've always wondered why Sony only marketed the thin plastic protector (~$12) while overseas they marketed the thick plastic one on the US sonystyle site.

I initially got a knock off of the thick plastic one that latches on the hinges, but mine always felt a bit loose, and it seems that dust can get under there, where the one I have now which is 6 layer 8H .5mm glass which has a thin black rim of adhesive all around the surface. The frame, and adhesive area is the exact same size as the black area on the nex screen, so there is no overhang, and no loss of viewing area, even at extreme angles.

The disadvantage to this is that it is so thin, that unlike the thick plastic type, you can't lay the camera on the LCD back, as now the LCD with new sealed glass cover is more recessed than the thumbwheel, but this is fine, if you don't rest your nex that way.

Also, not sure if the small amount of air inside the thin cover and surface will ever fog - I installed at 68 deg. F, and 45 % RH.

But it now feels solid, like there is no cover, and of course, the thick plastic cover can always go over this thin sealed glass cover if desired.

I tested the lower left sensor in light and dark situations with a 120 lumen CREE flashlight, and cannot see that it being covered is affecting dimming or brightening of the LCD in fully dark or bright sunlight. It could be, but just so subtle that my eyes are adjusting.

Anyways, the LCD now looks like there is no cover, but there is a very durable sealed cover, and the camera is now it's original thickness and feels less plasticy.

The one I got is from ebay, search "jyc pro nex lcd" - several vendors seem to sell it.

no, that is the thick one

no, that is the thick one

The sony p/n for the thin one is: PCK-LM1AM but unlike the JYC glass, it is plastic.

PCKLH1EM is the thick plastic type.

Besides clarity, and sealing/attachment differences, the thin one is about the thickness of a thin business card. The thick plastic Sony protector is about the thickness of a US nickel.

I have a $10 glass cover on my NEX and really like it. I had first used one on my Canon 40D, and really impressed that the thing is pretty much invisible, and tougher to scratch than the actual LCD cover.
