Which books are his best for street photography? I'm not sure where to start and am relatively unfamiliar with his work.

Well, I'd start with this book... which is a retrospective of sorts...

The retrospective mentioned is all you ever need.
I would not call the vast majority of Friedlanders work streetphotography though....
