Left hand shutter release

I found this while browsing ebay. I'm not interested in it at all, I just think its a really interesting accessory. Anybody know anything about these? Who made them, and more importantly why did they make them? It just doesn't seem like something needed at all.

It would be of interest to any M user with a missing right forefinger. Otherwise, I have used left hand releases on the Exacta/Exa series and have not found it convenient for me.
