Left or Right?

How do you fire a rifle like that? Doesn't the recoil cause the back of the receiver to break your nose? 😱

I know absolutely nothing about rifles and only used my uncle's one summer when I was a small lad (many many many years ago). Maybe he was a lefty? I have no idea.

Seriously, that might be true, Frank. But I thought I saw somewhere that the left eye is mostly working with the right side of the brain, which is the creative side if I'm correct. So even though your eyes send signals to both sides of the brain, isn't it possible that each side process those signals differently, and might be affected by which eye sends them?

Hi Mark. If both left and right eye send info via optic nerve (you are correct that they cross over) then both sides of the brain get info from each eye.

Thanks, Frank. So it seems that the LGN processes signals from both eyes, still with the ability (through the LGN and/or the brain) to detect the difference betweeen left and right eyes, even though in this simple diagram the signals appear to be blended together. That makes me wonder if there is a possibility for each signal to produce a different result in how each side of the brain processes it, since it already knows which eye each signal is coming from. Things that make you go "hmmm...". 😕

Though most right handers are also right eyed, as is usually the case with left handed folk having left eye dominance, some people have no particular eye dominance and can have pretty much 50/50 central vision.

You can tell which is your dominant eye by pointing at a subject with your strong hand (say a leaf on a tree) and closing the respective eye. If the subject appears to have moved, then the closed eye is dominant.

If it doesn't make any discernable difference then you probably have central vision. People like this, like myself, are the ones who have to close one eye or 'blink' when shooting shotguns and often have a hard time using scoped rifles with both eyes open. Not that I do either anymore.

I don't, however, have any problems using an M3 with both eyes open.

The results of the poll are actually quite interesting, for a change. I never thought that it'd almost be an equal split, with lefties and right eyed folk.

Obviously this is still somewhat subjective, being that only a handful of people have voted but it's still pretty interesting.

How many of the lefties have Rapidwinders I wonder?

Right hand...left eye...I've never felt uncomfortable doing it this way and have always thought that you right-eyed shooters were doing it all wrong...

I was first told that I used the 'wrong' eye while shooting clays.

I'm a right-hand/left-eyer too. That seems prominent here.

I have never took notice until recently. I naturally go Right Hand - Left Eye. going the opposite allows you to hold your camera closer (no obstruction from nose) but for me doesn't feel natural.

It is the right hand that doesn't talk to the left hand, often confused with the right eye/left eye myth... I did hear that radioactive lenses turn your eyes purple but I don't know if this hinders communication. I heard it on the internet.

Anywho, I shoot horizontals left-eyed and verticals right-eyed. For me its more comfortable to not squint so the camera blocks my forward vision in one eye but not my peripheral.

Most people are right handed and right eyed. I'm right eyed but always tried to shoot left eyed on occasion so I wouldn't be out of business if I had an eye injury. Now I'm developing a cataract in my left eye so it's no big deal.

Most people are right handed. Actually eye dominance is 50/50 right/left. Each eye sends info to both halves of the brain simultaneously. Each is hooked up straight back to the same brain side and each crosses over to the other side (no pun). This is why we have stereopsis or spatial depth perception. The right/left vote in this tread is close to even. So a camera is like a telescope. Which eye are you going to look with?

More people site a weapon with the right eye because of right handedness and most baseball players bat right for the same reason. But the shooter could be left eye dominant and more accurate with the target shooting left. And the hitters could be right eye dominant and bat better lefty (dominant eye should face the pitcher). Just my 2 cents 🙄 and of course there's always an exception to the rule.

I'm right handed and right eyed, but this past year I learn to shoot with my left eye.

With RF and a 50 mm lens I find it's much more comfortable to shoot with left eye, cause I can keep my right eye open and I don't have to squint . But when using a wide angle lens (a 28 elmarit) to me it's more comfortable to shoot with right eye, cause I can easily see the whole 28 frame in the viewfinder without having to move my eye around.

Your idea for the detailed poll is a good one. When I started it, I was just interested how many like me preferred the left eye, this was prompted by my current eye injury that forces me to use the other. I really never considered left/right handedness to be involved, since I figured, as in the "real world" only a small (single digit) percentage of the population is left handed! This strong showing of left handed people here at Leica M makes me think. This is quite strange, is it not? Are we more artistic/creative/anachronistic? I wonder.

Should we do another poll with all options or is this getting old?

Right Eye, Right Handed.

When I first started in photography I used my left eye. My Dad, seeing that, re-trained me to use my right so I could open the left while shooting. I'm glad he did in hindsight 🙂
